National Highways have an exciting opportunity for an Engineer to join our Road Safety team in the East region. The Road Safety Engineer will work in a multi-disciplinary role in the Road Safety team which will include developing and delivering schemes, identification of safety problems and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. You will also take part in/lead road safety audits, post collision investigations and be offered training where required to fulfil your duties. At National Highways you will have the opportunity to make a real difference for the customers that use and live alongside England's biggest road networks. You will support the delivery of the Safe Systems approach and work with internal and external stakeholders including Road Safety Partnerships to deliver interventions that will lead directly to a reduction in collisions.,

  • Supporting the development of feasibility studies for improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling / checking of relevant documents and collating evidence / options for value management, while taking into account new techniques, technologies, buildability, and costs. You may work on a multitude of other road safety activities to implement mitigation packages.
  • Delivering stage one, two, three and four road safety audits in accordance with GG119. You will be trained up in this area if you're not currently qualified to audit.
  • Post collision investigation reporting - which will include working collaboratively with other Stakeholders to establish the facts of a collision in the early stages of an investigation.
  • Supporting and undertaking analysis of collisions to identify patterns and clusters on the road network and to support IRAP star rating improvements to the Strategic Road network (SRN)
  • Ensuring that health & safety needs and the wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.

    Experience in Highways/Road Design and application of standards to develop schemes and interventions. Ideally this will include experience of mitigating collision risk and knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and their application on the highways network - in particular GG119.
  • A Degree/ HND or HNC in a relevant field such as civil/highways engineering along with relevant experience and membership of a relevant professional body such as ICE/CIHT/IHE, ideally actively working towards registration
  • Experience with road safety audits. Ideally you will already meet the GG119 criteria to be an audit team member.
  • Experience with identifying and mitigating road safety related concerns. Such as the cause of collisions and developing/delivering a mitigation to reduce the likelihood.
  • Must be able to work independently and prioritise work, as well as ensuring customers/stakeholders are aware of and understand those priorities.
