Science Raising Aspirations Lead
Required April 2025
MPS/UPS (+ TLR 2a)
Burton Borough is a vibrant and inclusive mixed school of 1160 students, situated on the Shropshire / Staffordshire border within the pleasant market town of Newport. Our location provides easy access to and from Shrewsbury, Stafford, Telford and Wolverhampton.
Burton Borough is in a very exciting point in its development having joined the Learning Community Trust on the 1st April 2024. We are proud to be a part of this growing Trust, which offers the successful candidate a collegiate environment within a research-informed community of professionals.
The school sits at the heart of the Newport community and aims to ensure that the skills, talents and attributes of all our young people are fostered so they flourish within a caring environment that has high aspirations for all. We believe that all students in our community have the right to the highest standard of education and see ourselves as having a privileged role in ensuring the young people of Newport prosper.
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful applicants will need to undertake a DBS enhanced clearance for the school.
At Burton Borough we hold the core belief that teaching practice based on an up-to-date, and deep understanding of relevant evidence is a hallmark of a high-quality education system, and crucial for students' learning outcomes. We are therefore looking for a science raising attainment lead who can inspire our science teachers to continue to drive standards of teaching and learning in the classroom through instilling a culture where, "Every teacher needs to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better." (Wiliam)
This role is perfect for someone who shares our Trust's vision that every young person in our care has the right to an exceptional education. We are dedicated to exposing our students to a coherently planned ambitious curriculum, that values science knowledge so that our young people become exemplary scientists.
Our focus is on having a classroom culture where high expectations that are underpinned by positive relationships, mutual respect and clear routines, allow our teachers to deliver high quality teaching and our students to enjoy and achieve within their learning.
We are seeking to appoint a science raising aspirations lead who:-
· Has a real enthusiasm for and a commitment to teaching science.
· Has a clear vision for an excellent science curriculum intent and implementation.
· Excellent science knowledge.
· Knowledge of the latest research on science teaching.
· Knowledge of GCSE specifications and exam requirements.
· Has a solid understanding of the principles of assessment and how this can be used to further enhance the curriculum and teaching.
· The ability to inspire and lead staff, offering training and support as required.
· Can deliver engaging and challenging lessons that promote students' scientific curiosity.
· Values the contributions of all students and adapts their learning accordingly.
· Creates a positive learning environment for all.
We offer:
· A professional learning culture that is highly focused on developing your teaching through a high-quality professional development offer at school and trust level.
· A strong pastoral community that offers support at year group level.
· A focus on career development.
· A school that provides rich opportunities for extra-curricular activities.
· A dedication to staff wellbeing, including a 'special' day of absence.
· A centralised behaviour system to support a positive culture.
