Full Job Description
GSK is looking for an experienced Scientific Leader in the field of Cellular Pharmacology supporting small molecule modalities discovery projects. The role sits in the Discovery Biology and Screening (DBS) department, part of a larger Research Technologies platform organisation forming the foundation for GSKs medicine discovery. The candidate will represent the department as a functional lead, working with multi-disciplinary matrix teams across Therapy Area Units and Research Technologies to define assay/screening strategies from target inception through to candidate selection and provide deep pharmacological expertise to guide data interpretation as needed. They will oversee the development, execution and interpretation of cellular assays and mechanistic biology packages to accelerate GSK's research portfolio. The person will be a key member of the UK Discovery Biology and Screening leadership team and will collaborate closely with their counterparts to drive alignment of resources and capability development to accelerate GSK's research portfolio. Individuals in this role will be recognised subject matter experts in their scientific discipline internally and externally to GSK and will maintain awareness of the technology and capability landscape in that discipline, ensuring that their team are applying innovative science and technology to GSK's portfolio. The role requires a collaborative, inquisitive and flexible mindset. Direct reports: 4-6,
- Develop and lead a high performing cellular sciences group, with a focus on talent development, succession planning and inclusive leadership. Accountable for setting scientific strategy, with the remit to design and deliver high quality assays, screening data and mechanistic biology studies in support of GSKs discovery portfolio to achieve key milestones.
- Work collaboratively as part of R&D matrix teams as a representative of DBS to define and drive optimisation plans, providing comprehensive pharmacological expertise and technical leadership where needed.
- Deliver substantive scientific value to DBS through leadership of portfolio support work and/or strategic initiatives within the department, proactively identify and enable modern technologies and ways of working.
- Develop strong and effective partnerships across multiple interfaces and stakeholders, using experience to make recommendations and influence strategic proposals.
- Foster a culture of scientific excellence by encouraging team to present and publish their science internally and externally.
- Develop a network with key collaborators within and outside of GSK and represent GSK in external fora. May hold external committee roles, or similar.

- PhD or equivalent experience in Pharmacology, Cell Biology, or related discipline
- Extensive knowledge of cell-based assays/models and deep expertise in mechanistic pharmacology approaches, ideally in an industrial pharmaceutical setting.
- Track record of successfully collaborating across scientific /technical disciplines and/or organisational divisions with demonstrated ability to articulate scientific strategy, risk mitigation and milestones deliverables.
- Recognised subject matter expert in Cellular Pharmacology or Cell Biology.
- Excellent line management skills, including history of developing, and retaining talent.
- Demonstrated digital fluency, influencing, strong facilitation, stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills. Preferred Qualifications & Skills: Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:
- Experience in pharmaceutical discovery with a thorough understanding of the drug discovery process from target identification to candidate selection
- History of peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or other external facing activities
- Knowledge of multiple therapeutic modalities (targeted protein degraders, biologics etc). Experience in complex cell models (primary cells, complex co-cultures, 3D cultures) and translational assays
- Use of advanced data analytic tools to drive decision-making.
- Self-aware and initiative-taking; seeks ways to improve personal and scientific skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. High learning agility and curiosity to learn and adopt modern technologies.
