Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two scientific practitioners to support our team at The Hewitt Fertility Centre, Liverpool on a permanent basis.

Successful applicants will be required to actively participate in semen analyses, semen preparations and oocyte collections along with routine laboratory preparation and maintenance. It would be preferable that the successful applicants have experience working within the clinical embryology/andrology laboratories and be familiar with the HFEA code of practice however this is not essential. The successful applicants must be personable, have excellent communication skills, enabling them to deal with patients directly and liaise with colleagues - being a "team player" is essential.

Please note, successful applicants will need to provide cover at both Liverpool and Knutsford sites on occasion.

To provide support to the andrologists and embryologists at The Hewitt Fertility Centres and perform laboratory procedures including oocyte collections and semen preparations whilst maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness within the laboratory., 2. To become fully proficient in, and to perform egg collections, semen analysis and sperm preparations, IVF inseminations and other procedures associated with therapeutic treatment provided by the Hewitt Fertility Centre.
3. To participate in the treatment of patients with known high risk diseases (ie Hepatitis B and C and HIV).
4. To undertake the formal witnessing of procedures as required by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to ensure the correct identification of patients, gametes (oocytes and sperm) and fresh and frozen embryos.
5. To become fully proficient in, and to perform preparation and setting up for treatment cycles.
6. To be proficient and use the computer database systems used by the Hewitt Fertility Centre. To carry out required administrative duties associated with the embryology laboratory.
7. To assist with ensuring that the clean room laboratories are maintained to the highest degree of cleanliness and tidiness.
8. To perform a daily audit of all equipment to ensure that they are functioning correctly and within critical parameters.
9. To assist with daily stock-monitoring and weekly stock and consumable checks within the Embryology Laboratory ensuring that the embryology laboratories are fully stocked. To receive and appropriately record deliveries.
10. To assist with monitoring and maintaining the liquid nitrogen storage facilities, ensuring stored material integrity. This will involve handling of liquid nitrogen, and manual handling of storage vessels in accordance with accepted safe practice.
11. To receive, and appropriately direct, gametes from patients attending the Embryology Laboratory and effectively obtain requisite identifying information and other information from patients.
12. To liaise directly and by telephone with the Clinical Embryologists, other members of the Hewitt Centre staff and other hospital staff ensuring that information is conveyed to colleagues accurately and in a timely manner.
13. To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide the highest possible standard of patient care.
14. To participate in the demonstration of procedures during the induction of new members of staff
15. To participate in the external QA (UKNEQAS) scheme in accordance with the World Health Organisation and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) standards to maintain UKAS accreditation.
16. To work flexibly and perform tasks as and when necessary including out of 'normal working hours' and to participate in a weekend rota. This will include working across all Hewitt Fertility Centre sites.
17. To assist in the audit requirements of the Embryology Laboratory.
18. To follow procedures, standards and protocols to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes and to ensure that procedures are performed effectively and to the highest possible standard, paying meticulous attention to detail.
19. To perform all duties in accordance with the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act (1990) and the Code of Practice issued by the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority and any other relevant regulation.
20. To work in Hewitt Centre Laboratories at other hospitals including, Knutsford, Leighton Hospital in Crewe and Ormskirk General Hospital as and when required.
21. To undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post.
