Full Job Description

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 3,000 skilled and committed professionals come together to provide research, advice and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for benefit of the environment and economy. The role of Scientific Support is based in the Surveillance and Laboratory Services Department. In this department we perform diagnostic tests for livestock and companion animals. The success candidate will support the scientists by providing clean laboratory consumables and a tidy and safe environment for them to perform their tests. Your responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Collecting dirty tins and glassware from the laboratories.
  • Using and maintaining equipment such as glass washers, autoclaves, washing machines.
  • Replenishing stocks of laboratory glassware and consumables.
  • Cleaning the communal laboratory areas, such as the corridors and store rooms.
  • Cleaning laboratory showers and mess room.
  • Completing all necessary paperwork to comply with the departments quality system.
  • Participating in all training necessary to perform your role safely.
  • Involving yourself in containment level 4 contingency drills and exercises.
