Discover Impactful Work:

The Scientist III in R&D will manage Protein Purification Improvement Projects, including immunogen and column ligand purification, quality assessment, and Root Cause Investigations. They will also contribute to the New Product Development process and lead continuous improvement initiatives within the department. This role involves problem solving, mentoring junior staff, and building relationships with cross-functional team members.

A Day in the Life:

We are seeking a project lead who can apply their technical expertise to design and implement activities that support our business objectives. You will analyze data, problem-solve, and make progress independently.

Create and prioritize project timelines to ensure timely completion of experiments and technical tasks; assist others in understanding priorities and overcoming logistical or technical obstacles.

Supervise and report on project activities, highlighting variances and risks to the timelines and taking or advising the actions of others to mitigate risks.

Share experimental/technical plans, results, and summaries with managers, the cross-functional team, and the wider PDX company through written and verbal communication. Present technical and project summaries effectively. Deliver scientific presentations internally and externally, as needed.

Effectively collaborate with colleagues on cross-functional project teams, identify and involve other SMEs as required from across the company.

Lead activities that generate new ideas for product concepts and processes, including recognizing experimental/technical outcomes that do not conform with the original hypothesis. Discover technologies and methods from external sources, including scientific literature that align with our core expertise and show how they can be applied to achieve company objectives.

Guide and supervise staff in project planning, task execution, and data analysis. Offer support to junior colleagues on quality assurance, GLP, and H&S for laboratory analysis, addressing any identified issues.

Provide support and mentorship to junior staff when needed, through regular meetings, goal setting, performance evaluations, and finding opportunities for growth and development.

Degree or equivalent experience in a biological science or chemistry subject area (grade 2(i) or above) or relevant practical experience in a biological science or chemistry laboratory.

A PhD or equivalent experience in a biological science, with a preference for immunology or protein chemistry.

Experience

At least 3 years of Post Doc experience or equivalent industrial experience.

Practical experience in the following areas is important:

Protein biochemistry

Protein purification and analysis using FPLC and/or HPLC

Indepth analysis of results

An understanding or practical experience in one or more of the following areas will be advantageous:

Protein-protein interaction techniques, especially SPR

Immunological assays

Immunology & antibodies

As a dynamic team, we will provide training and support across a range of development areas.

Proven track record of problem solving.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to perform scientific literature searching and identify information relevant to problem solving and business objectives.

Demonstrate good decision-making skills, with clear, justified reasoning. Proactively identify and communicate project risks, lead in the identification and management of risks.

Able to organize and lead project/core team meetings, coordinating and monitoring activities to deliver on project goals. Able to generate, access and update project plans and provide regular updates to the project manager or to the leadership team and PMO if leading a project.

Effectively communicate with employees at all levels, including team/department leaders, and participate in discussions to evaluate the usefulness of ideas.

Present research in the form of scientific posters or oral presentations internally and also at external meetings if required.

The role is primarily office based, with some laboratory work as required by the project.

The post holder will ensure that hazardous chemicals and reagents are handled appropriately and according to COSHH regulations.

The person in this role must follow company policies for quality, health and safety, and NPD to keep employees and products safe.
