Full Job Description

o To support the Theatre team in the care of patients prior to and during surgery.
o To provide a comprehensive handover at change of shift to colleagues.
o To undertake all safety checks to a high standard, documenting as per procedure.
o To assess patient care requirements, implementing and evaluating outcomes. Ensure the highest standards of infection prevention and control.
o To ensure that all documentation relating to patient care is within the boundaries of the national and hospital guidelines for good record keeping.
o To ensure that all incidents, accidents, and near misses are appropriately recorded and reported. Participate in investigations and implement changes to practice.
o To ensure that own practice and the practice of others is within an ethical and legal framework.
o To proactively participate in capturing revenue
o To understand the Clinical Governance process and actively participate in all processes
o To ensure adequate stock levels are maintained.
o To support with mentoring junior members of the team, assessing competencies, as well as supporting and identifying individual training needs.
o To support new business initiatives and assist with their implementation
o To provide clinical expertise.
o To take the lead in your clinical area for assigned cases, organising activities, and ensuring maintenance of a safe environment.
o To organise repairs and service contracts for technical equipment
o To ensure audits are undertaken and action plans put in place for improvement.

SCRUB:

o Prepare all the necessary instruments, equipment, and other materials as required.
o Assist with minor surgical procedures within scope of practice.
o Maintain safety of the surgical field.
o Maintain sterility at all times.
o Complete all relevant documentation.
o Complete all counts including all instruments used.
o Report all adverse events to theatre manager or co-ordinator.
o Act as a link between the surgical team and other parts of the theatre and hospital.
o Surgical first assistants are registered healthcare professionals who provide continuous competent and dedicated assistance under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon throughout the procedure, while not performing any form of surgical intervention.
o The role of the SFA should be undertaken by someone who has successfully completed a validated university programme of study that meets the nationally recognised standards, underpinning the knowledge and skills required for the role.
o The individual must always adhere to The Perioperative Care Collaborative Statement for Surgical First Assistant.
o The surgical first assistant works under the direct supervision of a surgeon who must remain in theatre until surgery is completed.
o Assisting with patient positioning, including tissue viability assessment.
o Skin preparation and draping prior to surgery.
o Superficial skin and tissue retraction with cutting of superficial sutures.
o Handling of tissue and manipulation of organs for exposure or access.
o Nerve and deep tissue retraction (The SFA can only move or place retractors under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon).
o Cutting of deep sutures and ligatures under direct supervision of the operating surgeon.
o Assisting with haemostasis in order to secure and maintain a clear operating field including indirect application of surgical diathermy by the surgeon.
o Use of suction as guided by the operating surgeon.
o Camera manipulation for minimal invasive access surgery.
o Application of dressings as required.
o The individual is required to log their hours.

o Registered Nurse with NMC or
o Registered Operating Department Practitioner with HCPC
o Surgical First Assistant Certificate (Accredited University Course)

EXPERIENCE

o A minimum of 2 years clinical experience as Surgical First Assistant / Scrub Practitioner
o Evidence of continuous professional development and its application

SKILLS

o Demonstrable knowledge and skills in a variety of specialties. With will include General, ENT, Gynaecology, Urology, Plastics and Orthopaedics.
o Patient focussed, able to deliver high level of customer service.
o Sound written, numerical, and verbal communication skills.
o Sound computer skills using MS Office Suite and Compucare(training provided).
o Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing needs of the business.
o Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently as required.
o Enthusiasm for cross-functional working, such as day care.

DESIRABLES

o Private healthcare experience.
o Previous experience in a senior position.
o Assisting in Surgical Procedures within their scope of practice and training.
