Full Job Description

Thank you for your interest in becoming Second in Charge of English (maternity cover) at Ashford School.

The Second in Charge will be committed to supporting the Faculty Leader in the management of this vital core subject. The successful postholder should therefore possess excellent subject knowledge, as well as strong organisational and communication skills.

The postholder should be capable of stretching High Potential Learners, as well as supporting students across the ability range, including those who are learning the subject in a second language.

The Second in Charge will be expected to build on the department's successful, engaging approach to teaching and learning, and will also be able to model and encourage academic rigour in the subject. Personal engagement is essential and responding to the needs of the individual student - be it preparing for examinations in booster classes or guiding the most able through Oxbridge applications - is at the heart of the faculty's ethos.

You should be familiar with computer technology as a tool for learning, teaching and administration, and be prepared to develop your skills further. All teaching rooms are equipped with permanent internet access and interactive whiteboards; all students in KS3 and KS4 have access to a Microsoft device in their lessons with which they use a variety of learning platforms.

The postholder will inspire students to enjoy English beyond the classroom, whether this is in creative writing competitions or attending author talks. Please note that the postholder will be expected to participate in department theatre trips to enhance curriculum learning.

The postholder will be committed to teaching both English Literature and English Language from Year 7 through to the AQA GCSE course. Please note that the faculty teaches the A Level Edexcel English Literature course as well as the A Level English Literature and Language course.

Teachers at Ashford enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff.

Single person accommodation may be available in return for boarding duties.

This position is at approximately 0.9 of a timetable.
