Full Job Description

Come and join Tameside Council to head up our building control team! We are recruiting a Senior Building Control Officer to work within our building control team to undertake technical assessments / activities on Class 2A - 2F buildings). There's plenty happening here! With some of the largest development pockets of land in the Greater Manchester area, Tameside has a number of significant growth projects that are being taken forward. These include the 2,000+ home Godley Green Garden Village, Ashton Moss employment site with capacity to deliver million sq ft of commercial, the St Petersfield mixed use regeneration scheme and other significant mixed use regeneration projects in Tameside's 9 towns. The Senior Building Control Officer will work as part of the Building Control Team within the Council's Planning and Transportation Service. Key responsibilities include :

  • To effectively manage a range of projects within Class 2A - 2F,
  • Examining plans and carrying out site inspections, initiating and dealing with enforcement action with no or limited need for supervision.
  • Deal with a range of Class 3G - 3H projects under supervision.
  • Assess dangerous structures and implementing immediate remedial works.
  • Provide supervision and management of the work of others within the Building Control sections management framework. e.g. Class 1 and Class 2 Registered Building Inspectors.
  • Further responsibilities include the inspection of reported dangerous structures and ensuring that appropriate action is undertaken under the powers in the Building Act 1984 and to carry out inspections of demolition works where a notice of demolition has been received as well as conducting investigations into unauthorised building work and carry out the appropriate enforcement action. You will deputise for the Building Control Manager in their absence, supervising daily workloads within the team and ensuring service delivery is met. We are therefore looking for someone with drive and ambition and managerial aspirations to assist the building control manager to take the service forward under the new building control regime. In return, Tameside will support your training and professional development through a recognised Level 6 qualification in Building Control.

    We are looking for a Senior Building Control Officer, who has :
  • Achieved or is seeking Class 2 or 3 registration with the BSR.
  • The ability to successfully complete a Level 6 qualification in Building Control; and
  • Has NVQ level 2 in literacy and numeracy or 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, in English, Maths, a Science (preferably Physics or Chemistry) and two other subjects.
  • The ability to work towards obtaining Class 3G 3H Registered Building Inspector status.
  • You will have a customer-focused approach, possessing excellent communication skills both written and verbal are essential for providing a customer focussed approach.
