Full Job Description

The successful candidate will be supervised by 5 consultant radiologists and 1 consultant radiographer specialising in breast imaging; 4 consultants also support the body imaging service with acute CT reporting and body on-call. We also work alongside a team of advanced practice mammographers who provide diagnostic and interventional expertise. The breast team also includes breast surgeons, breast care nurses, oncologists and histopathologists.

As well as a busy symptomatic service we run a national mammography screening programme for almost 100,000 women. We have a high risk screening programme comprising (as appropriate) annual mammography and MRI. Recent areas of service improvement include tomosynthesis, contrast enhanced mammography, vacuum assisted biopsy/excision and Magseed localisation. We have a high quality symptomatic MRI breast service and on-site PET. The successful candidate will gain experience with multidisciplinary team meetings held twice a week.

Main duties of the job

This post is suitable for individuals seeking a period of higher training in breast radiology to hone their skills. A multidisciplinary approach will provide fundamental experience in breast pathology, cancer genetics, epidemiology, service management, quality control, audit and evaluation. The fellowship facilitates exposure to a range of interventional techniques and the appointee will have the opportunity to maintain general radiology skills if they wish.

Interested fellows aspiring to further their career in leadership, teaching or research will be encouraged and supported to achieve this.

The breast service is delivered across 2 hospital sites: Royal Stoke and County Hospital, based in Stafford. Cross site working is encouraged.

The Breast Imaging Services are based on a strong ethos of Quality Assurance, Audit, Evidence and Research. We are currently recruiters for a number of national and international multicentre studies. We are a top ranked trauma unit in the country for patient outcomes and a fellowship here will provide great exposure to acute body radiology imaging.

There are extensive academic opportunities for Fellows, also opportunities for involvement in audit and Quality Improvement Projects which align with required supporting evidence for CESR application. Candidates will receive assistance with their CESR application and portfolio development as needed, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

The University Hospital of North Midlands is a standalone training scheme (a part of West Midlands School of Radiology). We currently have 38 trainees. We are also the main teaching hospital for the Keele University Undergraduate Medical School and there are close ties with the University of Keele and Staffordshire University.

In addition, there will be opportunities to provide teaching sessions to the Radiology registrars on the training scheme and a lecturer role to medical students at Keele University.

Research is a growing area of activity. A specialised research team within the department will help support research, studies and collaboration with other centres and the industry.
