Full Job Description

This is a 12 month post. The duties of the post will be comparable to those undertaken by a year three Specialty Registrar. However, in exceptional circumstances you may be required to vary these at the direction of the on call surgeon and with an agreement of the Surgical Tutor.
You will participate in the registrar on call rota.
This post does not carry the Postgraduate Dean's approval for training. Study leave and budget will be made available in line with the trust regulations. Work timetable can be negotiated to facilitate post-holders educational needs or commitments. The successful candidates will be able to discuss their career aims and progression with the surgical tutor. They will be encouraged to keep a record of their competencies and training., The successful applicant will be placed in any of the following Surgical Specialities and may have the opportunity to switch at 6 months into another Surgical Speciality:
- General Surgery (Upper Gi)
- Vascular
- Colorectal
Duties will include, daily assessment / ward round of in patients, supervision of junior members of the team, with regards to in patient management, attendance at outpatients clinics and operating lists, attendance on other departmental activities e.g. MDT surgical teaching, Audit M& M meetings. All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering first 6 months in post. Travel between hospital sites may be required. Please review all documents attached to ensure you familiarize yourself with all requirements of the job., The Senior Clinical Fellow will be expected to cover the Vascular and General surgical unit at middle grade (registrar) level. On call he/she will be supported by an FY1 and either an FY2 or a CT trainee and will answer to the on-call consultant. On call they will be required to cover the specialities of General Surgery, Vascular and Urology and in turn will be covered by the respective consultants in those specialities. The post-holder must respond promptly to calls from A&E and the wards (medical and surgical) to give advice and/or see and manage patients.
They would be expected to see urgent and emergency referrals from other disciplines/wards within the hospital. He/she must confer with the consultant on call and keep a record of such patients in the admission diary so that the patients could be appropriately followed up.
The Senior Clinical Fellow will keep an accurate and meticulous record in patient's case notes and will supervise junior medical staff to do so. All entries in the case notes should be signed (with time, date and contact number). In addition he/she will provide clinical supervision and support to the junior medical staff.
They must keep accurate record of emergency admissions and referrals and formally handover to the on call team at the end of their shift. Handover must be formal, should follow the SBAR pattern (Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation) Similarly they must make sure that they have understood the patient's problems and needs when receiving handover from somebody else. They will supervise juniors in writing comprehensive but succinct discharge letters and summaries. They must ensure that VTE prophylaxis assessment is undertaken and that prophylaxis is given.
They must supervise, guide and teach junior members of the team in such skills as time management and team working.

The Senior Clinical fellow will be expected to participate in departmental academic activities and audit of mortality and morbidity.
