Applications are invited for posts in the Medical Oncology department at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals. This posts is available as soon as possible for a period of 6 months with the view to extend.
Working at ST3 level
- Predominately outpatient clinic based
- Work pattern Monday - Friday 0830-1730
- Will receive educational support in the form of appraisal, regular journal clubs and teaching.
- Opportunities to join on call rota if appropriate to level of training., This post provides an ideal opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in Medical or Clinical Oncology. Successful applicants will gain experience in outpatient oncology clinics, systemic anti-cancer therapy prescribing, involvement in clinical trials and dedicated time for clinical research projects. Our department is well-recognized for its provision of specialist Medical Oncology training. Although these posts do not have educational support for specialist training, there are exciting educational opportunities, including involvement in clinical (trial) research, audit, appraisal, conference attendance and provision for study leave to be taken. Guy's Cancer Centre:
Guy's and St Thomas' is a Joint Cancer Centre with King's College Hospital that offers a full range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of all adult cancers. Patients from across South East London attends for treatment which is not available at their local hospital. The Trust's cancer services will be provided at both Guy's and St Thomas' sites as well as the new site at Queen Mary's Sidcup, Kent.
GSTT aims to build an internationally renowned Comprehensive Cancer Centre by:
+ Providing the very best cancer service to patients by combining first class clinical care with ground-breaking research and high-quality training and development across the AHSC.
+ Improving outcomes and experience for cancer patients with complex needs through earlier diagnosis, effective treatment and the provision of high-quality survivorship care.
+ Embedding whole person care across the cancer pathway and strive to bring treatment programmes closer to home.
+ Developing and test new biological and cellular therapies in a range of cancers.
+ Opened a new £160 million cancer centre at Guy's Hospital in September 2016 and a sister centre in Bexley in Spring 2017, which will transform the delivery of cancer services, so patients will receive the right treatment at the right time, delivered within fewer visits and tailored to their need.

+ To bring together the majority of cancer care and research under one roof, so that patients are given seamless care and staff can work together on diagnosing, treating and applying research into cancer.
+ To improve supportive care, patient information and complementary therapies at each stage of the patient pathway to improve patients' quality of life both during treatment and into recovery and survivorship.

Department Information:
Oncology forms part of the Oncology and Haematology Clinical Directorate within Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (GSTFT). The department is internationally distinguished for its commitment to research & development and constantly strives for excellence through dedication and innovation. Oncology at GSTFT has entered a new and exciting phase with a state-of-the-art Cancer Centre on the Guy's site. The Cancer Centre at Guy's Hospital opened in September 2016, this provides a single point for both diagnosis and treatment. This centre will be the hub for South East London providing specialist cancer services, training, development and research and allowing for better treatment and improved outcomes for patients. The Richard Dimbleby Cancer Information and Support Service| offers people with cancer information; complementary therapies and psychological support to help them and their families cope with their illness.
Cancer Care data:
Number of ambulatory day care beds/chairs (outpatients): 44 chairs (these are based in the Chemotherapy Day Unit and the Haematology Day Unit respectively). 10 beds (these are based in several locations across the Day Units).
Number of inpatient beds: There are 802 beds at the St Thomas's site and 288 beds at Guy's site. A total of 1090 beds across sites. 84 (core beds, made up of Medical Oncology, Clinical Haematology, Breast & Thoracic)
Main place of employment:
The post will be primarily based at the Guy's Hospital site. However, it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the Trust, either on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service. This could sites across St Thomas's or Queen Mary's Sidcup, Queen Elizabeth Woolwich, Princess Royal Hospital (Kent) or other hospitals within our cancer service.
Job Summary:
· The post-holder will be assigned to one or two cancer tumour-type teams at any one time, working closely with a team of oncology consultants. Post-holders will rotate through a variety of tumour types over time and are encouraged to document their achievements and progress. A consultant will be assigned as your supervisor to oversee your progress.
· The post will be largely outpatient based with up to four oncology clinics a week supervised by our consultants. Post-holders will be trained to prescribe systemic anti-cancer treatments and to manage toxicities.
· The post-holder will participate in clinical, research and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care. This will include scheduled working on the oncology wards and the Acute Oncology Assessment Unit (AOAU). There are opportunities to be sub-investigators on clinical trials and work on clinical audits and quality improvement projects. Leadership opportunities are also available.
· The post-holder will participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. A comprehensive weekly teaching programme is available including tumour-specific teaching and a journal club.
· The post-holder is required to follow Trust policies and procedures which are regularly updated., Clinical:
The post-holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Oncology services to the Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust to include:
1. Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the Trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
2. Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
3. The majority of the role will be in oncology outpatients, oncology wards or AOAU.
Training of junior staff:
The post-holders will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that post-holders has agreed with their supervising consultant.
Teaching:
The post-holder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Clinical Governance:
All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.
Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours:
There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.
European Working Time Directive (EWTD):
All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with EWTD guidelines.
Educational Programme:
Neither the London Deanery not the Royal College of Physicians accredits this post for postgraduate training. However, the post-holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, multidisciplinary meetings and journal clubs. Study leave and budget are available.
Appraisal:
All medical and dental staff are required to undertake appraisal.
Confidentiality / Data Protection / Freedom of Information:
Post-holders must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 1998. Post-holders must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person, those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act 1998 also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information.
Following the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) 2005, post-holders must apply the Trust's FOI procedure if they receive a written request for information.
Information Governance
All staff must comply with information governance requirements. These includes statutory responsibilities (such as compliance with the Data Protection Act), following national guidance (such as the NHS Confidentiality Code of Practice) and compliance with local policies and procedures (such as the Trust's Confidentiality policy). The CTC focusses on whole person care across the cancer pathway and strive to bring treatment programmes closer to home.
