Full Job Description
This job will include elective and trauma practice within the hip unit at UHS (East). There is a significant trauma component with time spent in the Major Trauma Centre per week, attending Pelvic and Acetabular Surgery lists. The post holder will work closely with Mr Philip Stott, Mr Majid Chowdhry, Mr Daniel Wilson and Mr Mark Edmondson (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons).
The post offers exposure to all aspects of primary hip arthroplasty, including the young adult, DDH, SUFE, Perthes and complex revision hip surgery in a tertiary hip unit.
UHS is a tertiary hip unit. Complex hip cases are referred in from other units in Sussex and occasionally Kent. There are 5 Substantive fellowship-trained revision hip surgeons practicing within the hip unit. Peri-acetabular osteotomy is not performed at UHS. There is a significant revision practice in UHS which varies from first revisions to Custom 3D printed acetabular reconstructions. The hip unit has a highly effective MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) meeting every fortnight.
Brighton has been a Major Trauma Centre for over 10 years. Pelvic and Acetabular surgeons have approximately 2 lists per week in the MTC. The post holder will be offered lists here. The successful candidate will be expected to complete a research project and publication during their tenure.
Our Senior Fellow Posts are all full-time posts at 48 hours per week; this includes 4 hours of non-rostered time per week for CPD such as research and quality improvement projects as well as traditional teaching. The post holder will have limited on-call duties at the Level 1 MTC at RSCH and will therefore be expected to be up to date with the management of complex trauma. Possession of FRCS (T&O) and ATLS is a requirement for the post.
UHS (East) is the regional teaching NHS Trust working across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital and is the regional Major Trauma centre within the National Major Trauma Network.
We provide general acute services to our local populations in and around the City of Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and the western part of East Sussex and more specialised and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the southeast of England.
Both hospitals provide many of the same acute services for their local populations. In addition, the Princess Royal is our centre for elective orthopaedic surgery and our hip fracture unit and the Royal Sussex County Hospital is our centre for major trauma, specialist orthopaedic trauma and critical care. Our specialised and tertiary services include orthopaedics, neurosciences, paediatrics, cardiac, cancer, renal, vascular surgery, infectious diseases and HIV medicine.
Central to our ambition is our role as developing academic health sciences centre, a provider of high-quality teaching, and a host hospital for cutting edge research and innovation; and on this we work with our partner, Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Postgraduate Deanery and our local Universities.
