Full Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior clinical fellow (SCF) to gain experience in medical education simulation training and a medical specialty with General Medical on calls.

The post is open to anyone who intends to go into a HST medical training programme (having completed IMT stage 1 or the equivalent) or wishes to take an OOPE within their current HST programme.

You will be part of the SIM team within General Medicine, providing procedural and human factors SIM for the IMT and HST doctors within the Trust, supported by the RCP college tutors and SIM team to both facilitate and develop the current simulation programme within General Internal Medicine. You will be supported to develop your own learning in both SIM and other areas of medical education. In the past 2 years, this work has been led by the Chief Registrars who have developed a strong legacy for you to continue to develop, as SIM becomes an increasingly important part of PG medical education.

Your clinical work will be based on an inpatient ward team of your choice (to be determined at successful appointment) and you will be on the GIM on call rota which is a 1 in 17 person GIM SPR rota with sessions both on 'take' (day and night) and in SDEC as the senior decision maker. There is a robust support network of Acute and GIM consultants who are available for immediate support during the day and remotely at night. You would have the opportunity to participate in outpatient clinical activity as per your clinical interest.

Your SIM work will be based in the newly built Whittington Education Centre (WEC) which has a state of the art simulation mannequin.

The work will be approximately 20% teaching, 80% clinical with personal development time within the clinical time commensurate with an IMT3 post (2 days /month). You will be supported to progress towards your personal training goals both in the clinical and educational aspects of this post. You will have a named educational and clinical supervisor and will be encouraged to maintain a portfolio of both your clinical and educational work. This post would be suitable for including in a CESR application.

The Whittington is a small and friendly London DGH with strong links to UCH Medical School and the local tertiary centres. This post is part of the ongoing drive to develop our SIM provision in line with curricular changes across IMT stage 1 and 2 (HST) PGME., Whittington Health serves a richly diverse population and works hard to ensure that all our services are fair and equally accessible to everyone. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the way we look after our staff. We aim to employ a workforce which is as representative as possible of this population, so we are open to the value of differences in age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, sexual orientation, and religion or belief. The Trust believes that as a public sector organisation we have an obligation to have recruitment, training, promotion and other formal employment policies and procedures that are sensitive to these differences. We think that by doing so, we are better able to treat our patients as well as being a better place to work.
