Full Job Description

The post will have a fixed-term tenure of 12 months. The post offers instruction in the management of patients with a range of shoulder and upper limb problems and exposure to surgery from basic to complex including arthroscopic reconstruction, primary and complex arthroplasty, trauma and post-trauma reconstruction. The post provides ample training opportunities in surgery of the shoulder, elbow and upper limb. The post holder will be expected to complete a service improvement project and participate actively in audit, research and teaching. The post holder's duties will include delivering care for patients under the care of the Shoulder and upper limb service, providing support to junior medical staff and receiving support and training from Consultant staff. Specific responsibilities will include overseeing the upper limb trauma service as well as the outcomes programme for shoulder and elbow surgery. For further details of the programme see https://www.boa.ac.uk/learning-and-events/courses/boa-future-leaders-programme.html Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute Trust with 768 beds and hosts the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) and provides a growing specialist orthopaedic service for the South West London and Surrey area. SWLEOC is one of the largest elective hubs of its kind in the UK and is well recognised as a centre of excellence and an exemplar during the post-pandemic recovery. The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Conducting outpatient clinics (seeing a mixture of new and follow-up patients) under supervision of the consultant and independently.
  • Assisting in the operating theatres and conducting parallel lists with the consultant when appropriate. The timetable will include the equivalent of 3-4 clinics and 3-4 operating lists per week. There will be opportunities for supervised and independent operating commensurate with skills.
  • Running the upper limb trauma service, ensuring patients are appropriately prioritised for surgery in close co-operation with the Trauma co-ordinators and developing referral pathways for upper limb trauma.
  • Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting and referred to the subspecialty. Supervising the foundation doctors, core trainees (or junior fellows) and SpRs in the day-to-day management of Upper Limb Elective and emergency orthopaedic inpatients.
  • The postholder will be on-call 1:12 weekend rota.
  • The post-holder will assist in a weekly fracture clinic.

    This post would be suitable for individuals who are seeking a career as a specialist shoulder surgeon and has an excellent track record of candidates progressing to Consultant posts in the UK and overseas. Candidates should have completed higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics including relevant experience in the subspecialty of shoulder and upper limb. Possession of the FRCS(Orth) or equivalent and full GMC registration are essential. Candidates must have achieved the CCT and be eligible for entry on to the UK Specialist Register prior to commencement of the post. Individuals who do not possess FRCS(Orth) or equivalent and a CCT need not apply.
