Full Job Description

The BBC is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Counsel to provide expert UK legal advice on employment law. This pivotal role involves working closely with senior stakeholders, offering strategic advice on the most complex employment law challenges facing the BBC, including matters involving the highest editorial, financial, operational, regulatory and reputational risk. This role will offer the successful candidate the chance to make a significant impact within a leading public service broadcaster.,

  • Provide expert legal advice on complex areas of UK employment law to senior management and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders to develop and implement strategic legal solutions.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to HR colleagues to effectively drive and manage complex workplace investigations and disputes.
  • Advise on employment-related policies and procedures.
  • Advise on a wide range of complex employment issues, including grievances and disciplinaries processes, ill-health, bullying, harassment and discrimination, TUPE and contentious work including Employment Tribunal litigation.
  • To be a technical subject matter expert and to maintain and share that knowledge with the team
  • Analyse, synthesise and present complex legal matters and risks to key stakeholders including senior management.
  • Supervise more junior team members and provide support to line managers in the management of the team

    UK-qualified senior employment lawyer with a current practising certificate.
  • Significant experience operating at a senior level in a leading private practice firm or corporate environment
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in UK employment law and Tribunal litigation - including discrimination, whistleblowing, equal pay and TUPE
  • Proven ability to manage complex workplace investigations and disputes and to manage complex projects and to make critical judgments at very short notice.
  • A track record of providing proactive, expert, timely and authoritative legal advice and assistance to senior leaders and key decision-makers at the highest levels.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills, with interest and commitment in providing supporting, developing and overseeing the work of senior lawyers, lawyers and others in the team
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior stakeholders and provide clear, concise legal advice both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to act and make difficult judgements calmly and consistently when stretched, facing change, or under pressure.
  • Experience in a high-profile work environment, preferably within a large, public-facing organisation or the media industry.
  • Ideally, experience in public law and judicial review work

    Salary: Up to £120,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
