Fancy working in one of the most varied media companies in the world, using a wide range of data sources and techniques?, Designs experiments, test hypotheses, and build models Conducts advanced data analysis and complex designs algorithmWorks with the data engineer to ensure that the information used is in compliance with the regulatory and security policies in placeQualifies where information can be stored or what information, external to the organization, may be used in support of the use caseIdentifies and analyses patterns in the volume of data supporting the initiative, the type of data (e.g., images, audio, video, text, clickstream etc.) and the speed or sudden variations in data collectionWorks in partnership with the data engineer to ensure that the information used follows the compliance, access management and control policies, and that it meets the qualification and assurance requirementsPartners with the data engineers to define the data quality expectation in the context of the specific use caseRecommends ongoing improvements to methods and algorithms that lead to findings, including new informationPresents and depicts the reasons for their findings in easy to understand terms for the businessReports results that contradict common belief, if neededCommunicates and works with business subject matter expertsEducates the organisation both from technology and the business perspectives on new approaches such as testing hypotheses and statistical validation of results. Helps the organisation understand the principles and the math behind the process to drive organisational buy-inProvides business metrics for the overall project to show improvements (contribution to the improvement should be monitored initially and over multiple iterations)Demonstrates the following scientist qualities : clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, significance, and fairnessProvides on-going tracking and monitoring of performance of decision systems and statistical models Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

  • Help shaping the way we answer the questions being asked, to deliver actionable insights to stakeholders
  • Select the appropriate statistical and algorithmic approach to solve a given problem
  • Work on short term estimation questions as well as long term complex productionised models
  • Combine data from a variety of sources, using SQL to interact with our Cloud databases
  • Use our in-house data and machine learning platform, programming in R or Python
  • Present the outcome back to stakeholders from a wide range of BBC departments

  • Post grad experience in a commercial data role, ideally within an agency, consultancy or similarly varied role
  • Experience working with panel and census data in a research, marketing or strategy environment
  • Understanding of research design and sample weighting
  • A hands-on approach to problem solving, from understanding the impact down to mathematical details
  • Experience in translating business requests into data modelling, understanding of how simple or complicated something needs to be to answer the question asked
  • Good programming skills with either R or Python, and hands-on experience with SQL for large datasets
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, within their own team and interacting with stakeholders
  • A degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, econometrics or related field, or equivalent work experience

    The BBC is a major stakeholder for industry leading audience measurement systems. Additionally, our world-class online products (iPlayer, News, Sport, Sounds, and more) reach millions of audience members every week, and create upwards of 1 billion rows of data per day.
  • These datasets together with your skills help to answer questions about audience behaviour and shape the future of the BBC. Working in a team of around 15 Data Scientists, you will be involved in a wide variety of analytics and machine learning projects. These range from combing different datasets and clustering audiences based on their behaviour, to econometric modelling to predict future media consumption. You will be part of a wider team of highly skilled data professionals and engineers, and interact regularly with researchers to contribute to high impact projects.
