Full Job Description

  • Visual storytelling (aka Special Projects) - Designing custom digital experiences for high profile editorial moments (eg elections, Olympics, sports events, cultural moments). You'll be working closely with other designers, motion specialists and data / visual journalists. Some examples of previous special projects include, App & web - Responsible for making iterative improvements to key parts of our app and web experience (especially the homepage, news, business and sport). This part of the role involves user research and testing to fine tune every part of our user experience. It's about never settling and always questioning how we can enhance the experience for our users.
  • Design system - Our design system is in its infancy so you have the opportunity to contribute and continue to shape it alongside the rest of the team.,
  • Be primarily responsible for the visual thrust, but also contribute as much to the strategic thinking and conceptual rationale behind those ideas
  • Be the lead creative on a particular project. This requires you to have the basic skills necessary to manage both yourself and the projects of other designers-leading and inspiring juniors and mids, and delivering compelling work from beginning to end
  • Have your finger on the pulse of current trends in the world of design / news / creativity / culture and bring that information and enthusiasm into the team everyday

    We are seeking a full-time Senior Designer to join our digital team. You will have raw talent, fastidious attention to detail and an entrepreneurial drive.
  • Working closely with Lead Designers, Creative Directors and Visual Journalists; you'll be working on innovative mobile-first formats that are a joy to read. You'll advocate for quality and consistency in our digital storytelling, whilst being unafraid to challenge briefs and push the boundaries where appropriate. You will be a team player with strong beliefs-loosely held. In summary, we need an ambitious team-player to push our design forwards with brilliant creative ideas, amazing design skills, an exceptional eye for detail and smart strategic thinking.,
  • You're ambitious in your thinking and brave in your designs with an ability to confidently present and justify your ideas
  • You're not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get involved at all stages of a project
  • You're naturally proactive and can lead projects successfully through to completion either alone or with a team supporting you
  • You're keen to learn and comfortable with experimenting to find the best possible outcome
  • You're a stickler for detail with finesse in everything you do
  • You're interested in the news cycle and current affairs
  • You have an instinct for when to follow design rules, and when to break them
  • Your Skills:
  • Hands-on experience as a Designer (doesn't have to be product design specifically but we are interested in your digital projects)
  • Completely at home working in Figma
  • Efficient, detail-oriented, organised, and able to work under tight deadlines
  • Able to build personal relationships and trust with stakeholders
  • Articulate, confident and assertive in presenting work
  • Additional tools are a big plus: code, illustration, etc
  • Professional experience as a Designer with project ownership and team leadership abilities
  • Excellent understanding of typography, colours, usability, and accessibility
  • Clear vision, editorial awareness, and interest in current affairs
  • Ability to create a consistent visual language that is beautiful, stylish, and recognizable
