Full Job Description

The Desktop Live Running Team (LRT) are responsible for all elements of the Department's desktop software deployments and 3rd Line support.

This primarily involves the management, support, and implementation of key technologies (primarily using Microsoft Endpoint Management) for a 100K+ Windows 10 estate. This also includes several other supporting infrastructure components such as iVanti UWM, Microsoft Bitlocker, KMS, Citrix and VPN Client integrations such as Checkpoint and Zscaler.

Desktop are the owners of the endpoint service, and thus accountable for all day-to-day operational support and releases to the production estate, working as part of the wider Desktop org. The work is fast-paced and ever changing.

The Desktop roadmap has a multi-year plan to deliver an enhanced service, with several long-term pieces of work ongoing. There are numerous L&D opportunities which can be aligned with your career goals.

We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to work with our team which has recently expanded to take ownership & control of several additional EUC (End-User Computing) services., This is a senior role in the Desktop Live Running Team which primarily has two functions:

1. Deployment of documented work packages to the Model Office and Production estates. This can be policy changes, application packages or other bespoke requirements for either LoBs or the entire estate as a core release.

2. Management and support of all incidents that reach 3rd Line desktop queues. This are often difficult or complex cases that require close collaboration both with the affected user and other Digital teams.

Our aim is to provide a modern, reliable, and flexible service that allows simple, secure access for deployment and management of modern desktop devices, using industry best practice for:

  • Intune, Autopilot, Microsoft Configuration Manager, WSUS

  • DevOps & Cloud Management

  • Windows 10/11 Builds and continued updates aligning with Evergreen

  • Supporting Desktop Technologies to allow seamless integration to the whole End User Desktop experience


  • Alongside this the successful candidate will also be expected to aide in the Support and Administration of:
  • Windows 10 Enterprise

  • Windows Defender

  • ConfigMgr and WSUS

  • Software Distribution using SCCM and InTune

  • Microsoft Bit Locker

  • Dell Server Hardware

  • DHCP

  • GPO / Config policies

  • Windows SQL Server 2016

  • Server Monitoring Tools

  • Build, Support and Maintain Windows Server 2016

    Leadership experience and the ability to deputise for the lead engineer are beneficial, but not essential., When giving details in your employment history and personal statement you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:

  • 3rd / 4th line knowledge of Configuration Manager, Intune, and W10 Desktops at the Enterprise level ~30k Devices and above.

  • Significant experience of working on Major Incidents as part of a response team.

  • 3rd line experience of Core Infrastructure Components Active Directory / DNS / DHCP / ADFS / GPO.

  • Significant experience of working in a large, multi-supplier environment.

  • Significant experience of technical change impacting and performing changes in a live service environment.

  • Significant experience of Enterprise Scale Software Deployment Tooling and Desktop Management.

  • Salary Information

    Pay for this role is from £52,412 to £63,517.

    The maximum salary for the grade is £63,517, however a Digital Allowance of up to £9,636 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

    Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

    Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

    Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.
