The Department for Business and Trade supports businesses to export, invest and grow, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. This support is driven by the Department's core mission: growing the economy., We are seeking two Senior Exports Analysts to lead key projects that support UK exporters. These roles sit in the UK Exports Capability and Data Science team, which is a multidisciplinary team, consisting of economists, statisticians and operational researchers, that works with policy and operational colleagues in the UK Exports Directorate, to produce the analysis needed to get the most out of the Department's export support services.

The UK Exports Capability and Data Science team uses data innovatively to produce insights across several areas, including strategic economic analysis to identify opportunities for export growth and operational analysis to improve the effectiveness of our support.

The team is committed to the professional development of our people, with a strong focus on sharing skills and knowledge. This commitment empowers the team to make a meaningful impact through high quality analysis.

Role 1: Subnational analysis

This role offers an excellent opportunity to lead UK spatial economic and trade analysis, directly informing the strategy and operations of the Department's export support. By identifying regional differences and analysing the drivers behind them, your work will provide the UK Exports Directorate with a nuanced understanding of trade performance. These insights will enable the Department to tailor and target support to meet the needs of businesses across the UK.

A key aspect of this role involves collaborating with analytical teams from across the Department. You will integrate and enhance spatial analysis to address pressing strategic questions, ensuring that the Department's initiatives are informed by robust, evidence-based insights.

Leadership is another important element of the role. You will have the opportunity to line manage an apprentice economist within the team, developing your leadership and line management skills.

This position also provides excellent opportunities for analytical skill development. You will work with large datasets using tools such as Excel and R to produce insightful analysis. These skills will be important in creating impactful outputs that inform the Department's decision making., This is a great opportunity for an analyst to develop their quantitative and data science analytical skills, improving the Department's understanding of the UK exporter population. You will work with a range of sources to do this, including microdata commissioned from HMRC and large published datasets to create new insights and analysis. Your work will help to build the evidence base that will inform and improve the Department's approach to export support.

This role includes the opportunity to manage research projects through the Department's call-off contract with Ipsos, a leading research company, investigating border processes and their impact on international traders. Further, the role offers the possibility of line management experience.

You will also be responsible for coordinating and producing a range of outputs, including analysis of HMRC microdata to provide insight into the impact of an international conflict or a change in trading relationship, such as a Free Trade Agreement or a sanctions regime. Your products will provide senior leadership and ministers with an overview of the opportunities for UK exporters.
