Full Job Description

The paediatric cardiology unit at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust is a level 1 congenital cardiothoracic centre and part of the Oxford - Southampton Congenital Cardiac Network. Cardiac services covering the entire spectrum of care are provided for all age groups and it is one of the major centres for fetal medicine, neonatal and infant care and adult congenital heart disease, covering the population of South and Central England. As one of the few fully collocated congenital cardiac services in the UK, close liaison exists across departments including: adult congenital cardiology, intensive care and regional specialist paediatric services. The medical team consists of 9 paediatric cardiology consultants, 4 consultant congenital cardiac surgeons, 5 consultant cardiothoracic radiologists, 9 registrars ST4-8 (including 3 paediatric cardiology trainees, 2 paediatric trainees and 4 clinical fellows), 4 SHOs ST 1-3. The Paediatric Cardiology ward has 19 beds including a 4 bed HDU area. Children requiring intensive care are looked after on the dedicated level 3 regional Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, which is located in close proximity. Extremely premature babies with cardiac problems are often cared for on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Princess Anne Hospital. All subspecialty interests within paediatric cardiology are represented and the centre is recognised for national training in paediatric cardiology. There is a purpose built non-invasive cardiothoracic unit, 4 dedicated cardiac catheter laboratories (including paediatric EP), fetal medicine service and dedicated cardiac CT / MRI unit Duties include ward cover of the paediatric cardiology ward, outpatient clinic work and on-call (including out of hours). In addition, you will have input into the care of congenital heart disease on the paediatric and neonatal intensive care units and on the general paediatric wards. As well as clinical evaluation, you will be expected to perform echocardiographic assessment as necessary, but will be provided appropriate training and support to undertake this. Participation within multidisciplinary meetings and other educational activities within the department is expected and research encouraged. The appointee will be requested to work on a 1 in 9 on-call rota, which is fully compliant with the New Deal., Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

We are looking for dynamic, motivated and hardworking individuals who are interested in developing their knowledge and skills in paediatric cardiology. You need to be a team player with good communication skills. Previous paediatric experience, including being conversant with the management of paediatric emergencies is essential. Previous experience in paediatric cardiology is desirable, but not critical. GMC registration is required.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) Basic Salary - MT04 £61,825 Basic Salary - MT05 £70,425 Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

  • Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
  • Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
  • A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)
  • Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview
