Full Job Description

We are looking for a Chartered Senior Landscape Architect to join our National Environmental Assessment Service team (NEAS).

NEAS manage the environmental assessment of the Environment Agency's Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) programme, to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and policy. We identify opportunities to improve the environment for people and wildlife and enable delivery.

As a Senior Landscape Architect, you will support programme delivery by providing specialist advice to teams delivering strategies, plans and projects.

You will provide guidance on landscape and environmental design and effective management of landscape risks and opportunities at all stages of the project lifecycle, from design concept, through detailed design, to long-term landscape management.

You will provide assurance on compliance with environmental legislation, including the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, and conformance with Government and Environment Agency plans, policies and strategies relating to landscape.

You will support the consenting process around works affecting designated landscape sites and engage with stakeholders and landscape groups to facilitate delivery of environmental outcomes.

You will support compliance with planning consents during construction and advise on landscape establishment and aftercare contracts.

You will be involved in ground-breaking, award-winning work, in collaboration with stakeholders. Including internal departments, statutory bodies, delivery partners, businesses, and communities.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

You will join a multi-disciplined team of environmental specialists providing technical expertise for FCERM programme delivery. You will work collaboratively with internal colleagues and environmental delivery partners in an Integrated Delivery Team. You will be supported by a Principal Landscape Architect.

We are currently seeking to fill vacancies in our Midlands, Eastern and North-East Hubs. However, we are open to applications nationally and will use this recruitment to fill any upcoming vacancies within 6 months., You will be offered comprehensive induction/training and will be given the time and space to learn while performing the role. You will be assigned a coach within the team. You will be given opportunities for CPD and training.

You will be supported by the wider, virtual landscape team which includes Principal Landscape Architects, hub Senior Landscape Architects and Landscape Contracts Support.

Base locations can be flexible but with an expectation of co-locating in Hub or delivery partner offices, as agreed with your line manager, and travel to sites across the hub.   • Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute with professional experience.

  • Experience of landscape planning, landscape and visual appraisal and impact assessment, landscape design and contract administration.

  • Experience of working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Effective communication.

  • Effective interpersonal and influencing skills enabling a collaborative environment.


  • Advantageous

  • Knowledge of flood and coastal risk management, however in house training is available.

  • Qualified or conversant in project management terminology.

  • Experience in mentoring and supporting colleagues.
