Full Job Description

This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. This definition includes both apparent and non-apparent conditions and impairments, and medical conditions such as Cancer, HIV or Multiple Sclerosis., We're recruiting a Senior Lawyer to join the BBC Commercial, Data Protection and Technology Legal team, based in London on a continuing contract. The BBC Legal Division is led by the BBC's General Counsel and provides legal assistance & advice across the BBC. Our overall structure is similar to that found in private practice firms and we support on a wide range of diverse matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and relatively fast-paced at times, we are open to discussing agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible working policies. The BBC Legal Division is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, Litigation and Information Rights, Intellectual Property, Employment, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial, Data Protection and Technology, and Competition and Regulatory Law., As a Senior Lawyer within the BBC C, DP&T Legal team, you will provide robust, expert, in-depth legal advice and support to the business as usual work as well as supporting on the resolution of complex commercial, data and technology legal issues and on negotiations for new business. You will also provide support on corporate law matters, often working with external counsel. This is a busy and varied role which will see you leading legal work streams relating to complex regulated procurements for a wide range of deliverables, as well as providing legal advice across a variety of commercial, data, technology and corporate related agreements. You will work with a range of personnel at all levels across the BBC and its commercial subsidiaries.

You will be a qualified lawyer with substantial experience of commercial, data and technology law, gained in-house and/or within a law firm. A thorough understanding of regulated procurement processes for enterprise services is essential and will be supported by your demonstrable experience of leading legal workstreams in complex regulated procurements. You will be familiar with leading the production of the legal documentation and legal interaction with the bidders during the process, as well as supporting the approvals process through to the execution versions of the awarded contract. Experience of negotiating and drafting a variety of commercial agreements within the technology, enterprise and/or media industry is essential and you will possess sophisticated and succinct drafting skills with the ability to pay attention to detail and to draft and format complex and multi-faceted agreements. You will also have a sound knowledge of data protection and privacy legislation, especially the UK GDPR. In addition to strong analytical skills, you will be highly organised and comfortable working to tight deadlines, often under pressure. With experience of advising clients at a senior level directly, in person, on the telephone and in writing, you will be confident in providing advice and well-reasoned arguments to support sound commercial, policy and legal advice. It is an advantage to have experience of corporate legal matters, and to have worked with external counsel on mergers and acquisition matters. The ability to lead and/or work within a multi-disciplined team and to supervise the work of more junior lawyers would be extremely useful in this role. Possessing outstanding communication skills (both oral and written), with demonstrable experience of building relationships across a range of people, you will be able to maintain effective working relationships with the rest of the team, internal colleagues and others, in a dynamic environment.

Salary: c. £85,000 pa plus London Weighting (£5,319pa), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. We're happy to discuss flexible working.
