Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Nurse in Learning Disabilities to join the Learning Disability Liaison Team as an Epilepsy Nurse based in Torbay.

The Learning Disability Epilepsy Nurse role exists to ensure that the needs of the person with a Learning Disability are met when they require access to Neurology Services for assessment & treatment of their epilepsy. The nurse specialist will deliver a comprehensive nursing service, providing advice, education and support to patients and carers suffering with epilepsy and those undergoing investigations to confirm diagnosis. This will involve communicating and working in partnership with a range of clinicians and services, working to change systems and educating where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

Provide information, advice, support and education to adults with epilepsy and their families/carers regarding their condition, drug therapy, medication administration and seizure control and the importance of keeping accurate records.

Support the Trust to achieve a multi-disciplinary approach to epilepsy care with relation to specialist clinics, support, advice, counselling and best practice.

Keep appropriate, up-to-date clinical data on epilepsy.

Actively participate in research/audit in relation to epilepsy

Assist the Neurology dept. to exercise their duty to provide people with a learning disability equality of access to the same healthcare as the general population, with added support to achieve the same health outcomes as those for the general population.

To work with the Neurology Dept to develop an action plan which aims to deliver appropriate improvements in service delivery and health outcomes.

Exercise leadership within the Neurology Dept to ensure that services are provided in line with current local and national policy & guidance for people with Learning Disabilities, which promotes the rights and inclusion.

Assist the Neurology Dept to manage the interface between mainstream general hospital services, primary care services and specialist learning disability services.
