Full Job Description

An excitingopportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Nurse in LearningDisabilities to join the Learning Disability Liaison Team as an Epilepsy Nursebased in Torbay. The LearningDisability Epilepsy Nurse role exists to ensure that the needs of the personwith a Learning Disability are met when they require access to NeurologyServices for assessment & treatment of their epilepsy. The nurse specialistwill deliver a comprehensive nursing service, providing advice, education andsupport to patients and carers suffering with epilepsy and those undergoinginvestigations to confirm diagnosis. This will involve communicating andworking in partnership with a range of clinicians and services, working tochange systems and educating where appropriate. Main duties of the job Provideinformation, advice, support and education to adults with epilepsy and their families / carersregarding their condition, drug therapy, medication administration and seizure controland the importance of keeping accurate records. Supportthe Trust to achieve a multi-disciplinary approach to epilepsy care withrelation to specialist clinics, support, advice, counselling and best practice. Keepappropriate, up-to-date clinical data on epilepsy. Activelyparticipate in research / audit in relation to epilepsy Assist the Neurology dept. to exercise their dutyto provide people with a learning disability equality of access to the samehealthcare as the general population, with added support to achieve the samehealth outcomes as those for the general population. To work with the Neurology Dept to develop anaction plan which aims to deliver appropriate improvements in service deliveryand health outcomes. Exercise leadership within the Neurology Dept toensure that services are provided in line with current local and nationalpolicy & guidance for people with Learning Disabilities, which promotes therights and inclusion. Assistthe Neurology Dept to manage the interface between mainstream general hospitalservices, primary care services and specialist learning disability services., Please see the attached Job Description and Person specification for the jobrole which gives of the criteria.

  • Substantial post registration experience
  • Experience as a Band 5 in an acute and / or community setting
  • Experience working within an MDT
  • Clinical Supervision and Mentoring Experience
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Mentoring students in line with professional requirements
  • Planning and Organisational Essential
  • Lead and supervise staff to provide a high quality, effective service
  • Good liaison skills and ability to manage difficult and complex situations
  • Effectively able to manage own time and that of the team
  • Ability to work flexibly
  • Qualifications Essential
  • A professional Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disability Nursing qualification
  • Epilepsy qualification or willing to do
