Full Job Description

As Senior Librarian in the Support Services Team, you'll play a key role in the development, implementation and embedding of processes and procedures, which are key to the smooth and efficient running of the Library Service across the City.

You will work to strict financial regulations and have knowledge of finance systems.

You will manage the Librarian (Acquisitions) who, in turn leads the Acquisitions Team, who support all aspects of the stock and resource acquisitions processes.

Working with the Principal Librarian (Library Management Systems and Support Services), you will support, maintain, and develop the Library Management System which is integral to and underpins the operation of the Service alongside associated essential library systems, such as Collections HQ, Netloan and other 3rd party online resource packages in order to provide an integrated, customer-centred, forward-thinking service. You will provide support and advice to all users of the Library Management System, and troubleshoot issues as required.

The role will require you to form partnerships both with colleagues within the service and externally, sharing innovation, and acting on new initiatives and opportunities.

You will maintain an awareness of working in the library environment and the needs of customers, always considering ways to improve customer experience and managers' knowledge. You will develop and deliver training and awareness sessions for staff and the public in your field of expertise., To play a key role in ensuring the development and delivery of high quality library services. As a committed library leader you will support the implementation of the Library Strategy through:

  • developing and maintaining specialist knowledge in a specific field

  • providing leadership and management to relevant staff and/or project teams

  • working collaboratively with others to make a positive contribution to the annual business planning process

  • leading the development and management of one or more key areas of library activity, ensuring best practice is embedded in approaches to service delivery

  • efficient and effective management of the delivery of library services

  • Responsibilities
  • You will be required to actively manage stock/resources and advise on procurement to meet service requirements. This will include responsibility for the performance of your area of specialty.

  • You will keep up to date with the latest developments and initiatives in your field ensuring the implementation of best practice within the service

  • You will develop and maintain relevant partnerships

  • You will identify funding opportunities and secure external funding as appropriate

  • You will contribute to the development and delivery of promotional campaigns to increase audience engagement across the Service.

  • You will creatively promote and publicise activity to all sectors of the community both within the library and through outreach work

  • You will be proactive in ensuring a level customer experience

  • You will apply HR policies and procedures consistently, including managing attendance, special leave, improving performance, disciplinary and grievance.

  • You will follow LCC financial procedures and regulations.

  • You will deputise for managers and colleagues in a variety of forums and duties as required, commensurate with grade.

  • You will be required to carry out risk assessments and implement safe systems of work.

  • You will be responsible for your personal health and safety and that of other people who use the library service. You will be expected to be vigilant for the safety of the building, opening and closing as required. Completing the duties of fire marshall, fire warden and emergency incident officer as assigned. There may be occasions when you are working on your own.

  • You will carry out the role of duty manager as assigned

  • You will work within multiple teams and at other venues as required, be flexible in working hours within your contracted hours and work evenings and weekends as required, including events outside of library opening hours. The work is physical and involves standing, lifting and carrying.

  • You will carry out duties in accordance with the Council's Equal Opportunities Policy and other policies which respect the rights and needs of customers and colleagues

  • This post involves direct work with the public in an open access setting, the post holder will need to display resilience to some demanding situations

  • Flexible and adaptable to change to assist other services as required commensurate to grade.

  • Improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and appropriate CPD programmes.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.

  • Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested.

  • You are able to inform the development of the service, e.g. through the business planning process

  • You are able to manage projects, set objectives, priorities and targets
