About the Opportunity

Our Specialist Consultancy and Laboratory Solutions business is looking for a materials scientist or metallurgist who can apply their skills and experience to solving a wide range of real-world engineering problems in order to support our clients in the nuclear industry and beyond.

Our materials team work on a range of experimental and desk-based consultancy projects, helping our clients identify materials for use in their nuclear fleet as well as identifying, investigating and proposing solutions to materials issues and failures using our extensive rig and laboratory facilities based in Warrington, Cheshire.

In this role you'll be part of a team delivering solutions for clients through experimental and analytical project activities, ensuring that at all times work is delivered safely and to cost, time, quality and client expectations. Reporting to the Operations Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as responsible engineer on a range of complex and multidisciplinary projects.

  • Leading on the design and implementation of experimental programmes to achieve the client's objectives, including the development of novel experimental and analytical techniques.

  • Analysis and interpretation of experimental data, with the aim to present key results and their interpretation in the context of the client's needs.

  • Production of high-quality technical reports, either as main author or providing supervision and support to others.

  • Engaging with clients, building effective relationships and developing a good understanding of their needs.

  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members in their development.

  • Undertaking business development activities, including contributing to the development of bids and proposals.

  • Taking a key role as part of a skilled and experienced team to effectively and efficiently deliver projects in line with cost, schedule and quality expectations.


  • Dependent on your experience and leadership skills they may be considered for a Team Leader role. The Team Leader role will include managing a small group of individuals which will need to be done alongside the responsibilities described above.

    Here's what you'll need:
  • Individual will be part of the Materials and Equipment Qualification team which works on a variety of projects including metallurgical investigations, polymer science and equipment qualification. The individual will need to be flexible and adaptable, able to work on a number of varied projects at the same time, prioritising as appropriate and willing to learn new topics.

  • You will hold a degree or higher level qualification (MSc/Meng/PhD) in a relevant physical science or engineering discipline eg metallurgy, materials science and will hold (or be ready to apply for) chartership with a relevant professional body.

  • Relevant professional experience demonstrating depth and breadth in technical/engineering skills for a variety of challenges, including delivery of experimental work in a laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge of metallurgy and associated characterisation techniques, with knowledge of nickel-based alloys and/or stainless steels and advanced characterisation techniques including SEM, EBSD and XRD.

  • The ability to clearly communicate complex technical ideas and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge in any of these areas would be regarded as an advantage: corrosion, tribology, equipment qualification

  • Enthusiasm, drive and a willingness to get involved.


  • The individual will be required to be in the office/laboratories 5 days a week. This can be reduced to 3 days dependent on project needs.
