Full Job Description

This role is accountable for the Mobile Backhaul, Ethernet (BTnet and Wholesale Ethernet) and Optical network architecture and design, with responsibility across our Business and Wholesale brands. It provides leadership to an immediate team of designers as well as a virtual team spanning Solutions Design, Delivery, Operations and other stakeholders. The role works closely with our Sales colleagues, with the role holder required to represent Networks at customer technical review meetings (requiring UK travel).,

  • Accountable for the network designs (and subsequent delivery of those designs) plus E2E lifecycle for Mobile Backhaul, Ethernet (BTnet and Wholesale Ethernet) and Optical. Ensures a great customer and colleague experience as well as meeting technical and security requirements.

  • Shapes the Mobile Backhaul, Ethernet and Optical network/technical strategy to enable the achievement of long term goals.

  • Drives transformation of the technology platform and operating model through the adoption of agile methodologies, automated capabilities, adoption of NetDevOps and simplification.

  • Manages the Network Design team, developing skills and capabilities through inspiring communication, goal setting, coaching and performance management to create a high performance culture.

  • Forecasts supply and demand of resource requirements. Manages and prioritises team workload and aligns with dependent teams.

  • Develops network design best practice within the team and works with other teams to establish benchmarks.

  • Develops close and effective relationships with customers, sales, product, vendors, suppliers and colleagues at a senior level. Able to confidently present information, facilitate negotiations, and provide thought leadership.

  • Accountable for security compliance of network designs in line with TSA requirements.

    High and low level network design skills in Mobile Backhaul, Ethernet and Optical networks. Good understanding of current and future Network technologies in these areas.

  • Proven ability to motivate, inspire and lead cross-functional teams through periods of change.

  • People management and leadership.

  • Detailed understanding of customer experience drivers with skills in driving improvement in customer experience (Particularly within the Wholesale and Mobile Backhaul markets).

  • Experience of delivering through Agile ways of working.

  • Experience of use of NetDevOps and automation to improve ways of working.

  • Commercial savviness; budgeting, demand management, vendor management. External bid support including ability to price solutions and negotiate with customers.

  • Proven ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the team at all levels of the organization, including those with different priorities from your own.


  • Experience you'd be expected to have
  • Mandatory: Experience of designing Mobile Backhaul, Ethernet and Optical networks (high and low level designs). Successful track record of implementing complex design deliveries, including initial feasibilities and proof of concepts/prototypes

  • Mandatory: Experience of working directly with large customers, understanding their networks and business models, and designing networks that meet their needs.

  • Mandatory: Experience of inspiring cross-functional teams to deliver to Channel and Customer requirements, on time and to budget.

  • Mandatory: Experience of Agile ways of working

  • Mandatory: Experience in NetDevOps and automation implementation

  • Mandatory: understanding of TSA requirements of Network Design and designing appropriately

  • Preferable: Roadmap setting or technology architecture experience.

  • Preferable: HNC/HND/Degree and/or Chartered Engineer Status and member of a professionally registered institution.
