Full Job Description

This fixed term Senior Ophthalmic Specialist position, with a view to becoming substantive next year, will be based full time at the Moorfields unit within Croydon University Hospital (CUH). The post has 4 direct patient care sessions and will form part of the well-established multidisciplinary team.

The 4 clinical sessions will comprise of 3 glaucoma clinics (face to face), 1 urgent eye care session (called the Rapid Access Clinic in this unit). This is an exciting and innovative schedule novel to Moorfields and reflects new ways of working for the future of ophthalmology. It is expected the successful candidate will work with the multidisciplinary team to develop these services further.

The Glaucoma Service at Moorfields Croydon is well established and highly specialist, treating all aspects of glaucoma pathology and caring for many patients with diabetic retinopathy. The complex patient demographics and the challenging pathology at patient presentationrequires consultant and senior ophthalmic specialist input for a significant amount of the clinical workload.

The Glaucoma service has undergone full service transformation, introducing a more efficient high flow diagnostic model of care with remote clinical review, which is aligned with the NHS long term plan, GIRFT recommendations and Moorfields strategy and will improve patient experience, deliver safe and effective care and meet future demand.

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

· The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice

· To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.

· To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.

· To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.

Performance Management

· To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:

o Clinical efficiency e.g. timeliness indicators, clinical indicators and the development of ambulatory pathways.

o Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-attendance rates.

o Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively including: managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target and ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.

o Operational efficiency e.g. demand management., The Specialist Ophthalmologist has a responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the functioning of the service, allowing for all appropriate delegation to and training for staff.

He/she will be responsible for the day-to-day management of his/her clinics or associated consultants' clinics. Participation in episodes of shared care and to provide advice and support to clinicians in other services with regard to patients who may have a combination of ocular problems.

All members of the consultant staff, honorary consultants and specialists are expected to contribute to the Medical Advisory Committee and to serve on other trust committees as required unless compelling reasons prevent this. All Specialists will be expected to participate in audit meetings.

All Specialists are expected to participate in clinical governance and audit, to meet annual training requirements, and to satisfy the annual requirement for continuous professional development set out by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. All Specialists will participate in the trusts' appraisal scheme.
