Full Job Description

The Parliamentary Policy and Strategy Team sits within the Ministerial Strategy Directorate at the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). The Parliamentary Engagement team leads the strategic engagement with Parliament across all the DBT's work. The team's goal is to provide a strategic approach to parliamentary engagement across the Department and provide expert guidance to Ministers and DBT teams.

This role is an exciting opportunity to lead on parliamentary engagement across DBT's trade portfolio. This includes working on trade deals, export promotion and economic security.

You will be responsible for making sure teams understand why we engage with Parliament and provide leadership in developing engagement plans with both the House of Commons and House of Lords across the policy areas in your portfolio.

It is vital that Parliamentarians understand the work of the Department. You will play a leading role developing how we communicate the positive work of the Department to Parliament by working with policy and communications teams and with ministerial private offices and special advisors.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about Parliament. You will need to be confident in talking about parliamentary processes and procedures with policy colleagues and private offices.

You will be responsible for ensuring products processed by other teams reflect the issues that matter to parliamentarians.

You will work closely with the Parliamentary Unit and other teams across the Parliamentary Policy and Strategy group,

  • To be successful in this role you will need to be a confident communicator and build strong networks across the Department.

  • You will provide guidance to teams on the different ways to engagement with Parliament.

  • You will need to be able to confidently edit or draft parliamentary engagement products with the support of policy teams and ensure teams understand the process to share information with parliament.

  • You will help lead on upskilling the Department on how to engage with Parliament.

  • You will be responsible for developing an in-depth understanding of the policy areas in your portfolio and be able to communicate this clearly to others in the wider team.

  • You will need to monitor the news/stakeholder sentiment and look out for issues related to trade and be able to highlight any issues that might arise in Parliament to relevant policy teams.

  • You will need to track the opinions of parliamentarians that are interested in your area of work.

  • You will need to work with teams across the Department to develop a clear understanding of key moments that will require parliamentary handling plans. You will need to think about how we can develop a clear narrative about the work of the Department and make the narrative relevant to parliamentarians., We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

Reserve Lists will be for each location and appointments made in merit order based on location preferences.
