Senior Solicitor (Regulatory)

Sellafield Ltd requires specialist legal advice to support the successful delivery of its mission. The role will support the Sellafield Limited Legal team's delivery of high value regulatory law support to an evolving business in a complex environment.

As a highly regulated organisation a legal advisor within the Regulatory Law team advises the business (including under supervision and direction) across a range of matters including but not limited to health and safety, environment, security and transport from regulatory interpretation through to assisting significant projects and dealing with enforcement. This involves delivering directly, and managing the, provision of timely and pragmatic legal advice on regulatory issues (including oversight of how business areas and requirements interface and how they manage compliance with many and varied legislative requirements), provide guidance (including through consultation) on both the creation and implementation of new regulation and participation and representation in regulatory investigation and legal risk analysis to support the business' strategic aims.

This may include identifying where niche areas of advice are required and to source this advice from within the Legal Services team or via our external supply chain partners. There will also be the opportunity to work with the wider NDA group legal teams.

The role will encompass a diverse regulatory caseload, including contentious and non-contentious work. Following an initial period gaining knowledge of the business environment under the direction of the other regulatory solicitors, you will be responsible for your own caseload and will report to the Head of Regulatory Law and ultimately the General Counsel.,

  Practicing Solicitor (or Barrister) with at least 5 years relevant PQE;


• Knowledge of a range of regulatory areas and a good working knowledge or desire to learn about SL;


• In particular, significant prior experience is sought in health and safety law and/or environmental law.


• An ability to assimilate information and make informed recommendations - often in limited timescales;


• Practical problem-solving ability;


• Ability to deal with a wide range of people across the business and to apply good client relationship management skills;


• Desire to be business-focussed and demonstrate a clear enthusiasm and passion for the business and your role in it;


• Demonstrable ability to work with legal teams and advisors in highly regulated and high consequence environments; and


• Ability to manage external legal instructions to ensure that advice provided by external legal advisors reflects relevant Sellafield Ltd processes.


Desired requirements:


• The Regulatory Law team advise across a variety of regulatory legal areas and so experience in any regulatory law area is beneficial.


• Prior experience of working in-house and/or advising within the nuclear sector or other similarly regulated sectors would be beneficial.
