Full Job Description

33 hours per week, 37 weeks per year (term time only plus 4 weeks in the holidays).

The role: The Senior Technician is responsible for providing a safe and inspiring learning environment for our pupils. You will maintain the equipment ensuring that it is in peak condition and that the pupils are using it in a careful, responsible manner. You will oversee the order and storage of supplies and will prepare the supplies and equipment that are required for lessons. You will be on hand to advise pupils and assist them to display items that will be exhibited. You will delegate the workload amongst the team and ensure that the highest standards of health and safety are adhered to at all times by staff and pupils. For a full description of the role please refer to the job description document attached to this advert.

The skills: This is an unusual opportunity for someone with a passion for practical design to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to young people working with a wide range of materials and machinery. You will have a good general education and relevant health and safety qualifications in the operation of workshop machinery and equipment. Utilising your demonstrable experience of undertaking a range of design-related tasks and passion for using technology to create objects using a variety of mediums, you will motivate and inspire pupils to develop their creative skills. Your strong organisation skills will enable you to ensure that the stores are fully stocked and that classrooms are well-prepared, and you will pride yourself on presiding over a department that upholds the highest standards of best practice and health and safety.

The environment: Harrow School is situated within a beautiful site in Harrow on the Hill, northwest London, and is one of the best-known schools in the world, with around 840 boys studying at Harrow. The Design, Technology and Engineering Department is housed in a purpose-built, open-plan building with individual rooms for electronics and graphics, a specialist Sixth Form design room and an exhibition area, along with a well-equipped workshop. All boys study the subject in their first year, 74 boys have continued it to GCSE and around 24 boys are taking A level, and the results they achieve under the tutelage of the teachers and technicians produces outstanding results. There are four full-time members of the department and one part-time technician. The workshop is open every afternoon during the term for boys to pursue hobbies and interests.

The benefits include:

  • Free lunch.

  • Free parking.

  • Automatic enrolment in the School's pension scheme.

  • Use of the School's sports facilities such as the swimming pool, gym, and running track.

  • Subsidised membership of the tennis, golf, angling and social clubs.

Applications will be processed as they are received and we may interview suitable candidates before the closing date; therefore early application is advised.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are values that are important to us at Harrow. We believe in diversity of thought and actively welcome everyone regardless of their background to bring their valuable and relevant skills to our community.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All successful applicants must be willing to undergo enhanced child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with any past employer and the Disclosure and Barring Service, and it is an offence to apply for the role if the applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. No member of staff will be able to start until these checks are complete and this process takes, on average, a month. Please plan accordingly
