Full Job Description

Providing a high quality translation service (English > Welsh and Welsh > English) and to undertake related duties as a key member of Cardiff University's Welsh Translation Service.,

  • Work unsupervised to provide translations of the highest quality for Schools and Departments across the University
  • Collaborate on the development of a university-wide Welsh translation service with the Manager - Welsh Translation Service and colleagues within Professional Services and Academic Schools.
  • Develop and support a machine translation system and translation memory.
  • Resolve issues independently and use judgement and creativity to suggest the optimum resolution to issues as they occur
  • Operational Duties
  • Provide a service that will have University wide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action, identifying solutions to a wide variety of translation requests and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood
  • Edit and proofread the translations undertaken colleagues within the Welsh Translation Service as well as check the quality of translations provided by external providers
  • Ensure that the provision of management information is available, particularly to coordinate the regular updating of essential translation records.
  • Deputise for the Manager - Welsh Translation Service in their absence.
  • Managing the day to day administration of the Welsh Translation Service.
  • Develop a performance review process to track the benefits of using translation memory software
  • Forecast and advise on translation requests in order to plan the Translation Unit's workload accordingly
  • Develop and deliver training as required.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Translators within the Translation Unit, ensuring departmental objectives are communicated and engaged with, planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently in relation to the translation requirements of Schools and Departments across the University.
  • Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed
  • planning issues where they fall within set role objectives
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links
  • with the University's Schools/Colleges and Professional Services and outside bodies as required.
  • Provide a professional Welsh<>English translation service to the University, interpreting the requirements of the customer and the subject of the communication to provide contextually appropriate translations, adhering to the compliance requirements of the University and ensuring the University's Welsh language is presented to a high and consistent standard
  • Develop junior members of the Welsh Translation Service by providing feedback on their work and offering guidance
  • Utilise relevant translation technology (post-editing machine translation and the University translation memory output) and software to ensure accuracy, consistency, and value for money in relation to translations.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University in relation to translation issues., General Duties
  • To undertake familiarisation with the University, its structures, aims and objectives, compliance requirements.
  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  • To be cognisant of confidentiality and issues around personal and sensitive data in all areas of activity.
  • Abide by all University policies.
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

    The post holder will be an enthusiastic team member who can work under pressure in a professional environment to deliver high-quality translations promptly. In addition to excellent translation skills, you should have relevant experience in handling translation requests and managing your workload effectively in line with varying demands and deadlines.
  • Simultaneous translation skills would be desirable but are not essential., 1. Proven ability to communicate effectively and accurately in both Welsh and English, orally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences, and at all levels. 2. Substantial experience of providing high calibre Welsh <> English translation work including editing and proofreading translations undertaken by others and of providing appropriate feedback for developmental and training purposes. 3. Demonstrable cultural awareness in relation to Wales, and the Welsh language. 4. Proven ability to manage and prioritise own workload and to meet tight deadlines e.g. press and web releases. 5. Membership of the Association Translation Association. Qualifications and Education 6. Educated to a degree level or equivalent. Knowledge, Skills and Experience 7. Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge within Welsh <> English translation 8. Experience of using translation memory software Customer Service, Communication and Team Working 9. Proven ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered. Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving 10. Proven ability to research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solution. Desirable Criteria 1. Experience of providing interpreting services or willingness to access appropriate training. 2. Line management experience. 3. A relevant postgraduate/professional qualification. 4. Experience of undertaking translation work preferably within, or for, the Higher Education Sector. 5. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.

You will be entitled to 37 days of annual leave plus bank holidays.
