Alkaptonuria is a rare disease, resulting in challenges in detection and appropriate treatment. The National AKU Centre was established by the Department of Health Specialist Commissioning Services in 2012 and was set up to provide assessments and treatments for people with AKU.

We are a diverse team, knowledgeable and welcoming, working in an open plan office, creating an ideal atmosphere for peer support and sharing of best practice., To communicate with patients in the context of assessment, and with colleagues in the AKU service.

  • Knowledge of which assessment methods are likely to be most appropriate and helpful.

  • When appropriate, to communicate this understanding in meaningful ways to colleagues.

  • Assistance in the evaluation of the service including auditing and continuing appraisal of the best forms of service delivery.

  • Advising the service managers re: issues, policies, etc, which affect the client group

    This is an excellent career opportunity for service psychologist with an Undergraduate degree in psychology, with proven experience of managing caseloads independently. Experience working with patients affected by rare diseases would be an advantage.

  • Supervised postgraduate experience in neuropsychological assessment., Proven experience of managing caseload, independently.

  • Demonstrable experience of working with colleagues from other professional disciplines


  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience in working with patients affected by rare diseases., Proven competency in selection of neuropsychological tests.

  • Competency administering, scoring and reporting neuropsychological tests.

  • Awareness and experience of ethical issues relevant to neuropsychological assessment., Ability to make use of clinical supervision.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to use electronic data systems in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues from other disciplines., You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

    Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

    Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing the successful applicant/s DBS application be recovered via salary deduction following start in post. The amount of £18+£5 (standard disclosure) or £38+£5 (enhanced disclosure) will be deducted from salary, in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment.     For agenda for change banded roles; salary payments will reflect the 2023/24 pay scales. The 2024/25 pay scales will be paid in October 2024 including any backpay due. Therefore should the successful applicant start in post prior to October, the salary will initially reflect the 2023/24 pay scales.
