Full Job Description

There are around 30 visiting instrumental and vocal teachers, all with a wealth of teaching and performing experience. Working within our well-established Music Department and reporting to the Director of Music, the Singing Teacher will work closely with colleagues in all Music faculties. The Singing Teacher will form part of a team of instrumental and vocal Visiting Music Teachers and will be responsible for the further development of College's vocalists.

The successful candidate must be prepared to teach the full range of ability up to and including Grade 8 and diploma level. In recent years, pupils have achieved excellent results in ABRSM, Trinity, and London College of Music examinations including ARSM diplomas.

The ability to teach across genres, including classical, musical theatre, and pop is a necessity.

Among other things, the postholder will be responsible for:

  • Providing high-quality individual teaching to College pupils of various skill levels, from beginners to advanced singers, ensuring a bespoke programme for each pupil pushes them to develop their skills;

  • Providing constructive feedback on pupils' progress and performance;

  • Preparing pupils for GCSE and A Level performance examinations;

  • Preparing pupils for auditions including music scholarships, choral scholarships, regional and national-level ensembles, and entry to music colleges;

  • Encouraging pupils to make music together, collaborating with the leaders of musical groups in College and liaising with the Director of Music to ensure all pupils are catered for;

  • Maintaining open and effective communication with pupils, parents, and colleagues.


  • Opportunities may exist for the direction of ensembles and sectional rehearsals, as well as participation in choirs.

  • Professional singing teacher with considerable skill and experience of teaching in the 13-18 age range;

  • Ability to learn new systems quickly or existing knowledge of: SOCS Music, used to schedule music lessons according to departmental policy. Microsoft Teams for internal department communications (training will be provided) iSAMS and other school-specific databases;

  • A team player, with the ability to create a happy and constructive atmosphere in which pupils can thrive as well as a genuine passion for singing and music;

  • Up-to-date knowledge of singing technique, including insight into stylistic approaches to classical, musical theatre, and pop music;

  • Knowledge of a wide range of repertoire which features the voice in a broad range of western art music.
