Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse to join Haematology Ward 2A. The role will be a rotational role working on Ward 2A and Ward 2A Haematology Day Unit, providing leadership, creating a positive environment to work in and ensuring high standards of patient care are maintained with the patient at the heart of everything we do. Excellent communication skills, a good knowledge of clinical standards and a range of clinical skills including chemotherapy administration and the management of treatment related toxicities are important. The ability to pre-assess patients for fitness to undergo treatment is essential. The role involves providing holistic care, promoting awareness and education of haematology issues and supporting patients and their families during a critical time in their cancer care. The role will involve having good organisational skills to help care for patients receiving chemotherapy or other supportive treatments; working alongside our haematology team. The role will involve working in collaboration with the chemotherapy lead nurse to ensure that annual chemotherapy competencies are met through teaching and competency assessment of ward based staff. Interview Date: TBC · To act as clinical expert for nursing issues within haematology · To supervise junior staff in the delivery of safe competent care · Take appropriate action to address any issues or risk · Promote a patient focused multi-disciplinary approach to holistic care in collaboration with carers, health care professionals and other AHPs · Ensure a safe and timely discharge / transfer of patients · Ensure that treatment prescribed by the medical team are carried out and that changes in patient condition are escalated as appropriate · Act as advocate for the patient, respecting dignity, wishes and beliefs · To develop protocols and pathways to develop the chemotherapy service in line with Quality Surveillance requirements and DH policy. · To contribute to supporting the ward manager in their duties. · To assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care. · To administer chemotherapy, intravenous therapeutic substances and blood products. · To provide specialist advice regarding chemotherapy treatment and complications to the multidisciplinary team, GPs, other hospitals and community services. · Acknowledge any personal limitations of competence in accordance with the 'NMC Code of Professional Conduct'. The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.,

  • Maintain Professional Registration
  • Adhere to relevant Code of Practice of the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Adhere to the Trust policies and protocols
  • To participate in the recruitment, orientation, development and any other personal issues related to staff as required
  • Optimum use of resources so that standards of care and safety are not compromised
  • Maintain effective communication systems, so that all staff can practice in an informed and professional manner
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives, visitors and staff as required
  • Attend a weekly chemotherapy meeting and present caseload for coming week
  • To investigate any untoward incident/complaint thoroughly. Liaise promptly with the Ward Manager, Matron or Directorate Manager
  • Deputise for Senior Nursing staff as directed
  • Be fully conversant with the Major Incident Policy and be prepared to support its activation as required
  • Ensure effective infection prevention and control methods are followed
  • Maintain effective allocation of staff utilising appropriate skill mix in absence of the Ward Manager
  • Cross cover with chemotherapy unit (Lilac Centre) when required
  • ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • To ensure that the recording of patient care is comprehensive, concise and in line with the NMC Record Keeping guidance
  • Ensure IT systems are current e.g. ADT to ensure that all patient information is confidential and is not disclosed to a third party except with permission of the patient or the Manager in Charge
  • To keep patient records up to date on a day to day basis following any interaction with patients/relatives
  • To ensure all unit documentation is completed
  • TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES
  • To maintain an effective learning environment for all staff, contributing to the training and assessment of staff
  • To act as a role model and expert practitioner, providing support and guidance to nursing staff
  • To work in collaboration with the chemotherapy lead nurse, to ensure that chemotherapy nurses receive annual updates and a competency assessment.
  • To ensure that there are up to date resources available to support, teach and develop nursing staff.
  • To participate in the annual performance review of identified staff Band 5 and below in order to identify their training and development needs
  • To participate in an annual performance review to identify the post-holders personal development needs
  • To personally ensure fulfilment of the requirements to maintain active and valid professional registration, persona and professional development and NMC revalidation.
  • To assist with induction, preceptorship and mentorship programmes for new staff as appropriate., Responsibility for designated nursing staff within team including appraisals, HR management and support in clinical practice in conjunction with the Ward Manager
  • Responsibility for nursing staff within the team in the absence of Ward Manager or deputy Ward Manager.
  • Participate in meetings pertinent to the unit / ward
  • Attend chemotherapy advisory group meetings, acting on any recommendations and feedback information to Ward Manager and chemotherapy trained nursing staff
  • To be responsible for ensuring all patients and their relatives/carers are kept fully informed of patient's treatment/progress and discharge plans/after care.
  • To report all accidents, hazards, incidents and complaints in accordance with Trust policies and assist in investigation of them as required.
  • Comply with Health and Safety polices.
  • FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY · Maintain efficiency and minimise any waste
  • Provide information to enable income and expenditure from activity to be recorded accurately and in a timely manner
  • RESEARCH & AUDIT · Responsible for following clinical trials protocols
