Full Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic and energetic person, committed to delivering exceptional levels of customer service, to join our dedicated team undertaking the role of Senior Leadership Team (SLT) Secretary. There is one part time (30 hours) permanent position based at Essex Police Headquarters, located in Chelmsford.

The role

You will be providing a full range of services, including but not limited to: minute taking and typing from audio and/or notes of meetings, drafting letters, diary management and liaising with both internal and external customers., Where appropriate we will make adjustments to the selection process, working arrangements and/or the working environment provided it is reasonable in all the circumstances to do so.

    You will often be required to work independently but also as part of a team in a pressurized environment and will need to organise and prioritise your own workload.

    The demands of the SLT you will be working for can be fluid and dynamic, therefore you must be able to evidence a high level of flexibility and decision making in order to prioritise and adjust workloads to meet deadlines.

    As a first point of contact for your SLT and a representative of Business Services, you must have effective communication skills, self-confidence and a good telephone manner, providing quality customer service at all times. Initiative and judgement to respond to and deal with problems sensitively as they arise without the need for support are also essential.

    It is necessary you are proficient in a range of IT products including Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook (diary management) and preferably OneNote/PowerPoint. You will be able to produce documents to a high standard always ensuring accuracy. Audio-typing skills and shorthand will be an advantage, together with a high standard of grammar.

    Applicants will need to provide evidence of the following essential skills and experience within the reason for application:
  • The ability to work on your own initiative and also with others

  • The ability to manage and prioritise conflicting demands

  • Previous experience of minute taking/recording of meetings and actions

  • Proficient use of MS Office information technology packages


  • In addition, it would be desirable to evidence:
  • Experience of managing and supporting diary events

  • Evidence of using SharePoint and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge of the Police environment and policy

  • Successful applicants for this role will be defined as an; Office based agile worker. Essex Police offer agile working which allows some flexibility in terms of work arrangements. Due to the operational nature of this role, it will be predominantly office based within an office-based team. Some travel may be required to other police sites to discharge duty.

    Essex Police offer incremental increases within this salary band, therefore the salary for this position will rise to a maximum of £27,351.00.
