L3Harris in Tewkesbury and Fleet form part of our ICI division. In the land domain, our T7 and T4 multi-mission robots deliver next-generation remote capabilities and uncompromised performance. We design and manufacture world-leading land force protection systems, cyber and electromagnetic activities (CEMA), electronic warfare (EW) and encryption capabilities. Our cyber capabilities provide an information advantage in the fields of kinetic conflict, cyber warfare, force protection and counterterrorism. We are seeking a Software Architect or an experienced Software Engineer with a passion for software architecture and a proven track record of technical excellence to design and develop innovative, cutting-edge systems. This role offers the opportunity to shape software solutions that prioritize performance, reliability, and scalability, while remaining hands-on throughout the development lifecycle. Depending on your expertise, you may contribute to our internal Electronic Warfare, Integrated Air & Missile Defence or Information Resilience portfolios. Alternatively, you could be collaborating with a high-concept team working on next-generation cryptographic solutions, safeguarding data at the highest levels of National Security. Please note that although hybrid working may be available, this is dependent on specific projects, and as such may change from time to time. As a result, we cannot guarantee hybrid or remote working for this role. The successful candidate must be capable of full-time on-site presence at our Tewkesbury facility. - Professional registration with the IET (Engineers only) What the role will involve Your role may involve individual contributor tasks, Scrum Master responsibilities, or both, depending on the projects you are assigned to. The responsibilities of your role will include the following:
- Applying your software expertise as an individual contributor to help develop complex software systems or taking on Software Architect responsibilities to define and shape solutions;
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define functional and non-functional requirements for embedded and/or user interface software projects;
- Creating of high-level architectural designs, addressing system integration, real-time constraints, resource limitations, hardware errata, etc;
- Creating of lower-level design, implementation and test solutions, in line with the defined architecture;
- Helping to guide the selection of appropriate technologies and tools in collaboration with DevOps engineers;
- Supporting and promoting adherence to coding standards, best practices, planning documentation, procedures for software development and delivery, and continuous improvement initiatives;
- Providing technical guidance and mentorship to software engineers;
- Ensuring team members are working with a clearly defined and well-understood software architecture;
- Meeting cost and schedule targets while contributing to technical reviews, bids & proposals, budget & schedule discussions, customer engagement activities. What you'll bring The role requires the following experience and skills:
- Proficiency in C++, preferably embedded C++;
- Experience of Rust is very desirable;
- Knowledge of other languages such as C, C# JavaScript, Python, etc;
- Proficiency in either back-end development (e.g. Spring Boot, MongoDB, Java) OR front-end development (e.g. HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, React.js, Node.js, ASN.1, RESTful APIs / JSON / HTTP);
- Experience with DevOps tools and practices (e.g. containerisation / Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, micro service architecture, version control (e.g. Git / GitLab), continuous assurance / CI/CD and associated best practice);
- Strong object-oriented design and programming skills (OOD, OOP);
- Familiarity with development methodologies (e.g. V-model, Waterfall, Agile);
- Proficiency with tools like Jira and Confluence;
- A proven track record of delivering reliable, maintainable software across the lifecycle, including peer review;
- Strong communication, documentation and organisational skills;
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Desirable Skills
- Experience with Linux development environments;
- Experience architecting software systems that interface with hardware;
- Experience with the Angular framework;
- Familiarity with any of .NET Core, TypeScript, RxJS, NPM;
- Understanding of Agile methodologies, including Scrum or SAFe;
- Demonstrated ability to document, plan and manage software team activities;
- Experience of setting up, monitoring and reporting appropriate metrics throughout the software project lifecycle.
