Full Job Description

We are looking to appoint an experienced and passionate SENCO to join the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

The successful individual will need to be confident to lead our SEND department and support all our students across our whole school, Year 6, Key Stage 3 and 4. You will need to be a qualified teacher who already has the SENCO qualification or is currently working towards it.

We are a unique school in many ways as we have a 3 day academic curriculum and a 2 day vocational curriculum, however all our students still complete 8-9 GCSE subjects in Year 11 alongside their vocational curriculum.

The role is 3 days a week and based in school. The days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Due to the structure of the academic curriculum in our school there is no flexibility to change these days. You will have a small teaching timetable, and we are flexible about which subject this is. As the timetable is set now for September it would probably be some KS3 PSHE lessons.

You will be joining an experienced LSA who works mainly in supporting Maths.

We welcome applications from candidates with experience gained from either the independent or state secondary sector, with no preference for a particular one.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about ensuring SEND students are always fully supported. You will be a team player, flexible, organised, hard working and committed to enabling children to flourish. All our teachers are role models who have high expectations that inspire, motivate and challenge students. They all demonstrate consistent high standards of personal and professional conduct and lead by example.

Whilst we are known for our Performing Arts, we do not require candidates to have a performing acts specialism or background. The vocational side of the school is catered for entirely by the team who works alongside the Creative Director and there will be no scope for candidates to work in this area. We do however encourage our staff to make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school so you will have many opportunities to get involved in school events such as our regular trips to the theatre and school clubs such as Chess and Gardening.

The wellbeing of staff is very important to us and our staff are very friendly and supportive. We are an experienced staff community and have a culture of sharing ideas that support each other in our pedagogy. Our school calendar year mirrors the borough's state sector which supports our staff who may have children in local schools.

We do hope that you will consider taking your next career step at the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

Sylvia Young Theatre School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and the successful applicant will be required to apply for a DBS disclosure.

The position is for a January start but we would be happy to consider an earlier start eg September or October. We will therefore be having a rolling interview process with no preference for a particular start date. We reserve the right to interview and close the position as soon as a successful candidate has been appointed.

References will be taken up after the short-listing process. Online and social media checks will also be made at this stage.

Please apply using the TES quick link application.

The application pack can be found here.

Thank you for your interest in working in our school.
