Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership's (ESEL) Haematology Department as we currently have Specialist Biomedical Scientist vacancies across our partnership sites. We require strong team players with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner, committed to supporting the clinical services of the Trust and meeting the needs of our patients by participating in a 24-hour Agenda for Change shift system. The successful candidates will be primarily based at one of the following sites but may be expected to cover and support other ESEL sites depending on service demand. The ESEL partnership consists of the following hub and spoke sites: Royal London Hospital (hub), St Bartholomew's Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Homerton Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Woolwich) and University Hospital Lewisham. All laboratories are UKAS accredited, utilise Winpath LIMS and are equipped with Sysmex systems in Haematology and Coagulation across all sites. Blood Transfusion employs Bio-Rad and Grifols analysers to support the largest Blood Transfusion department in the UK.

  • Vacancy may close early if adequate applicants received ., The Specialist Haematology section at RLH is equipped with Bio-rad Variant II and Sebia Capillarys systems whilst the Specialist Haemostasis section offers an extensive testing repertoire to support the respective Comprehensive Care Centres within Barts Health for haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia and paediatric haematology. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward thinking and innovative organisation to deliver a high quality service for one of the largest networked laboratories within the NHS. The successful candidate MUST be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist AND have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio. Note: Candidates who do not hold the completed IBMS Specialist Diploma may be considered but will be taken on under an Annex 21 contract where a percentage of Specialist Band 6 BMS salary will apply. Training support will be provided for completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma across a day and night working pattern.

The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health. The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites. Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma. The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.
