Full Job Description

As a Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be expected to work within the professional standards expected as a registrant of the Health Professions Council (HCPC) and maintain a portfolio of evidence supporting Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The post holder will be responsible for scientific and technical service delivery within the Histopathology services section of the laboratory.

Duties as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist will include performing a range of scientific procedures involving the processing of biomedical specimens to contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and investigation of pathological processes and will include undertaking of complex diagnostic tests and the interpretation of complex diagnostic tests to facilitate a diagnostic report to be produced.

The post holder will be required to conform to agreed standard operational procedures, Health & Safety procedures, departmental and organisational policies and good laboratory practice. Within their work duties the post holder will be expected to comply with the standards as required of UKAS and other relevant professional and regulatory Bodies e.g. H.T.A.

Subject to meeting the necessary competence requirements, the post holder will be required to participate in patterns of work which are in place to ensure the provision of appropriate 24-hour laboratory services, in accordance with the requirements of the clinical services users.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, like-minded HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to deliver services within our exciting University Health Board.

The Cellular Pathology Department provides a diagnostic service for the City of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan and provides tertiary services including Neuropathology, Electron Microscopy and Foetal Pathology for the larger population of South east Wales and beyond. The department has close integration with University services supporting a diverse range of research and clinical trials. The laboratory is accredited to UKAS ISO 15189:2012. The department is accredited by the HCPC to provide pre and post registration training.

An accredited Biomedical Sciences degree, HCPC registration along with sufficient post registration laboratory experience are essential.

Qualified BMS without a specialist diploma or equivalent in Cellular Pathology will initially be employed under Annex 21 at 75%. Support will be provided to complete the Cellular Pathology specialist diploma within a designated timeframe.
