Full Job Description

Applications are welcome from Specialist Psychiatrist Doctors with 6+ years in the grade to meet the minimum criteria of the post. This post attracts a Recruitment and Retention Premium of £1,000 pcm. The post holder is expected to be Section 12 registered and appointed to a full-time, 10 PA role, providing cover for HMP Elmley mental health services. Following appointment there will be a meeting at no later than three months with the Clinical Director or Kent Prison Lead to review and revise the job plan and objectives of the post holder and agree the formal job plan. The job plan will be reviewed at least annually thereafter. The overall split of the programmed activities is 8 to be devoted to direct clinical care and 2 to Supporting Professional Activities. The timetable is indicative only and will be reviewed. The SPA time available will allow achieving appraisal and revalidation requirements for the GMC and meeting PDP objective. There are no out of hours on-call associated with this post., Clinical work - HMP Elmley (8 PA DCC)

  • assessing prisoners in the house-blocks and in Healthcare
  • liaising with services outside the prison to arrange CPAs, aftercare plans or transfers to hospital
  • attending the inpatient unit to manage psychiatric cases. The inpatient unit has 29 beds, of which about 70% have mental-health related difficulties
  • clinical cover to HMP Stanford Hill, a D-category prison adjacent to Elmley with a very small number of patients mainly managed by mental health practitioners.
  • quality improvement initiatives, to be agreed with multidisciplinary colleagues and the service managers.
  • Take a lead in the management of complex cases and provide clinical leadership of team. Quality improvement/Research/Teaching- (2 SPA)
  • These sessions can be used flexibly and the post holder can base themselves remotely (Base of their choice) unless required to be on site for data collection or clinical activities associated with this.
  • The activities could include clinical audits, research projects, service improvement or other tasks associated with clinical governance
  • The research or quality improvement activity may be part of further education such as masters or PhD or other postgraduate qualifications
  • The postholder would be encouraged to undertake the AC status course.
