Full Job Description

We are recruiting for a Specialist Midwife for Diabetes who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.
You will lead on the development, coordination, and implementation of the Specialist Diabetic Service within Maternity in conjunction with the Obstetric and Diabetes Lead providing expert and coordinating the care of patients with pre-existing and gestational diabetes., The post holder will provide effective leadership to the diabetes/pregnancy team and act as lead midwife on diabetes in maternity services.
You will be involved in the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines for pregnant women with diabetes and will work towards developing a structured approach in diabetes care to ensure a comprehensive, high quality diabetes service within maternity.
The post holder will be a point of contact for diabetic patients and will be responsible for the support and advise on both diabetes control and midwifery care throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period.

This includes the promotion of flexible working opportunities across the Trust., Communicate sensitive specialist information in relation to diabetes and the effect of the condition during pregnancy, to pregnant women and their family with empathy and reassurance.
Plan and implement a pathway of specialist care for women with diabetes who are pregnant and women who develop diabetes during pregnancy in line with NICE guidance.
Provide insulin initiation programmes, home blood glucose monitoring and continuous blood glucose monitoring.
Advice medical and midwifery colleagues of appropriate treatment changes and provide clinical advice on management.
Within the specialism, the post holder will be responsible for the adjustment of medication according to dose adjustment protocols, to optimise glycaemic control seeking guidance as necessary.
Provide advice and support to colleagues to women receiving IV therapy and sliding scale insulin in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period.
Participate in all specialist antenatal clinics.
Maintain telephone advice service.
Lead and undertake research and clinical audit related to specialist area of practice.
Provide specialist training and education to the multi-professional team and external stakeholders.
Play an integral part in the planning and development of the diabetic services at Medway Maritime NHS Trust.
Make available to the women and family information to facilitate their management of diabetes in order to promote independence and minimise complications.
Plan workload using guidance, policies and professional code of conduct in accordance with the needs of the patient group, using own judgement to define day to day work priorities.
Oversee and facilitate screening programme for gestational diabetes including robust education programme for midwives.
Provide clinical leadership and expertise to the governance and risk agenda.
Play an active role within the multi-disciplinary team.
