Full Job Description

The role of the specialist screening practitioner (SSP) is to follow the patient through their cancer pathway. The SSP will assess patients for their suitability to go on to have diagnostic tests, follow up histology results and inform patients of their ongoing care pathway if appropriate., The post holder is responsible,as part of a multidisciplinary team, for delivering a comprehensive bowel cancer screening service. The postholder will be responsible for care delivery for patients who have been identified by the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme who require follow up care. They will be expected to provide and co-ordinate care from the screening centre to address the needs of the individuals identified by the Screening Programme. There will be a period of training and induction for the postholder to be able to competently carry out this role.

To assess whether a patient is suitable to undergo a diagnostic test via the screening programme. To counsel the patient and allay their concerns and fear regarding the diagnostic test. The SSP acts as an advocate for patients within bowel cancer screening. The SSP follows up histology and scan results and together with the screening endoscopist, plans the appropriate pathway for the patient. SSP's work closely with the Colorectal MDT's as patients who are diagnosed with cancer are monitored closely to ensure correct pathways and targets and standards are met.

The North East London Screening Centre (NELSC) is comprised of three sites: Homerton healthcare NHS Trust, Whipps Cross Hospital and the Royal london/ Mile End Hospital. The newly appointed SSP may be required to work at any one of these sites although once the training period has been completed, you will be based at one site for the majority of the time.
