Full Job Description

Applicants should be aware that face to face patient contact is currently limited as our patients are offered telephone assessment appointments in the first instance. You will however see patients who require subsequent face to face assessment appointments at GP surgeries and hospital sites across Greater Manchester, and when they attend their colonoscopy appointments. Our patient cohort covers Central and South Manchester, Trafford, Stockport and Tameside.It is therefore essential that you own a car and have a current full UK driving license with business cover, and you must confirm that you meet these criteria in the supporting information on the application form.

As an SSP, you will be making decisions based on your clinical assessments during the initial Specialist Screening Practitioner Positive Assessment clinics and liaising with different disciplines and specialties to ensure that patients are prepared and booked for their tests in a safe and efficient manner.

You will attend colonoscopy lists to support the patients on the day of their tests and to document live data about their procedures on the BCSS database.

You will also be managing the interpretation and documentation of histology results and then communicating these results to the patients. When cancer is detected, you will be responsible for establishing effective links with local colorectal MDTs to ensure there is a timely presentation and transfer of patients within the 62-day cancer pathway. Once patients have been discussed at MDT the responsibility of care is passed to the symptomatic service and their screening episode is closed.

Support and Education

Education is provided, and you will be expected to successfully complete the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Specialist Screening Practitioner Course at Liverpool John Moore's University. Completion of this course within 2 years of being in post is mandatory and must be passed successfully for you to continue working within the programme.

A 12-week Induction Programme linked to the John Moore's course is provided. You will shadow our experienced Specialist Screening Practitioners during assessment clinics and endoscopy procedures, and when completing histology and administrative duties.

Your competency within the role will be assessed before you are able to work autonomously, and this is a requirement for the John Moore's course. You will be supporting patients through their pathway, informing them of their results and inputting information onto BCSS.

You will also attend the mandatory 2-day BCSS Course where you will be trained to use the BCSS database.

You will also be enrolled on to a 2-day Advanced Communication Course as part of the role involves informing patients of significant results. You will need to draw on specialist knowledge & advanced communication skills to provide psychological support to our patients throughout their BCSP pathway, and upon their diagnosis.

Working Hours

The hours for this role are condensed over 4 days, Monday to Friday 8am-6pm. The day off during the week will change on a weekly basis to ensure that you are familiar with all clinics and endoscopy lists. These hours may change in the future due to service expansion where you will be expected to work some evenings and weekends. Due to clinics currently being telephone based, there may also be opportunities to work from home, subject to service need, risk assessments being completed, and competencies being achieved.

A minimum of 5 years post registration NHS experience within a specialist area is desirable, as you will be undertaking comprehensive clinical assessments to assess fitness and suitability for colonoscopy or CT Colonography of individuals who have received a positive Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) Kit. We are looking for someone who cares about the people we see, can work autonomously on their own initiative, feels confident in their clinical assessment skills, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. There is also a considerable amount of data that you will be expected to input onto the Bowel Cancer Screening System database, spreadsheets, and MS Teams, so having attention to detail and being comfortable with IT systems is vital., Disability Confident
