If you are interested in flexible working, please talk to the recruiting manager for this vacancy., An experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated speech and language therapist is required to provide a specialist service to children supported by the Luton Youth Justice partnership and partner agencies.
Based within Bedfordshire Speech and Language Therapy service but working in partnership with the YJT, you will provide assessment, diagnosis and support for a wide range of communication difficulties within this client group.
You will support staff within the YJT to develop their communication skills with this client group, raising awareness of SLCN and develop strategies for supporting the range of communication difficulties presented by young people on this caseload.
The successful candidate will also have a role in contributing to the development of services in this area, in conjunction with YOS staff.

Ensure that the service to young people known to the YPS is effective and co-ordinated through the implementation of evidence based practice, clinical governance programmes and monitoring and evaluation.
Ensure effective partnership working across agencies for this part of the service
Use highly specialist clinical skills to manage a specialist caseload of children with a range of communication difficulties. To identify caseload, assess and diagnose communication impairments and select appropriate management for effective treatment.
Take a clinical lead role in service development in this area, including identifying the types of communication disorders found in the young people in contact with the YPS
Have a specialist advisory role for the Trust in this specialty area
To undertake training of YPS staff and partner agencies where identified and required.
Raise awareness within the YPS of the types of communication difficulties faced by the young people and to offer strategies to facilitate their communication
In conjunction with YPS management team, develop and implement policies relating to SLT and YPS developments
Facilitate access to mainstream services as appropriate

All are welcome to apply and our promise to you is a culture which prioritises staff engagement and development., The post holder will provide a specialist SLT service to the young people working with the Youth Partnership Service (YPS) and their families, the YPS staff and the partner agencies working with the young people.
The post involves identification at a highly specialist level, the types of communication disorders found in this client group and the provision and delivery of a range of appropriate interventions to the young people and their case managers. They will contribute to the strategic development of health provision within the YPS.
The post holder will work with youth partnership staff to facilitate their communication skills with this client group and as part of this work will undertake training of YPS staff, and partner agencies where required. To raise awareness of the types of communication difficulties faced by the young people and strategies to facilitate their communication.
The post holder will also liaise where necessary to develop increased understanding of communication difficulties and appropriate interventions with partner agencies in respect of those children known to the YPS. They will provide highly specialist clinical input to this group of young people and advise re the development of services in this area.
The post holder may also work alongside colleagues in a consultative role as part of the SEND Improvements pathways, particularly contributing to transition work streams

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To work collaboratively and liaise with a wide range of professions across a variety of locations and agencies, ensuring co-ordinated interventions as part of a young person's overall intervention plan.
2. To accept referrals, triage and agree appropriate assessment and intervention plans as for children accessing the YPS, liaising closely with the YPS team.
3. To attend and report to case conferences/review meetings etc. for patients on the caseload with support as requested. To provide input to planning in relation to a young person's management, and to provide specialist advice and information.
4. To attend and provide input to the Local area partnership meetings other relevant meetings as requested by YPS.
5. To present and communicate clinically relevant information in order to motivate and inform young people, their families/carers, YPS staff partner agencies including the Police and Criminal Courts, ensuring management planning relevant to the needs of the young person.
6. To use good interpersonal skills to listen to and counsel young people and their families/carers, ensuring the provision of support and empathy without prejudice.
7. To establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with YPS staff and those from partner agencies, using open communication, trust and respect.
8. To present and convey complex written and verbal information clearly to young people, their families/carers, YPS staff and partner agencies.
9. To communicate effectively with young people with communication problems where difficulties in understanding exist, using observation, listening and empathy
10. To use negotiation skills in the management of conflict across a range of situations
11. To record all work undertaken on the YPS database in a timely and accurate manner
12. To ensure that own behaviour and decision making supports the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of service users and professional colleagues.
13. To attend YPS business, Service, panel, review meetings as required.

1. YPS Practice manager and leadership management team
2. Speech and Language Therapy Service Manager.
3. Speech and Language Therapists working in Luton (including those with school support remit).
4. YPS Health workers: YPS Nurse, Community Mental Health Nurse, Drug and Alcohol Worker

6. Any other YPS workers

Budgetary Responsibility
Does not hold budgetary responsibility but is aware of the need to plan non-pay expenditure.

People Management
1. To work independently accessing appraisal within an Individual Performance Framework at predetermined intervals ensuring that the objectives set reflect the Service and Trust plans.
2. To identify personal/professional development evidenced by Personal Development Plan.
3. To attend relevant training (courses, meetings, special interest groups) and development in order to maintain and develop skills and knowledge required of a highly specialist therapist working in this field to keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good speech & language therapy practice in Special Education for children with learning disabilities and maintain up to date HPC and RCSLT registration
4. To actively participate in reflective clinical supervision with peers/clinical supervisor in order to develop and enhance practice.
5. To provide mentoring, advice and support to more junior Speech and Language Therapists, assistants and volunteers.
6. To provide training and consultation to YOS staff and, where appropriate, partner agencies.
7. To provide second opinions to less experienced colleagues, and expert opinions to others
8. To develop and deliver regular specialist training (formal and informal) to Speech & Language Therapists and others in area of clinical expertise, reflecting on and evaluating the training provided
9. To identify the training needs linked to specialty for wider service.
10. To provide advice to non-specialists and other specialists/ professionals within clinical field.
11. Maintaining own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and KSF process.

Clinical and Practice Governance
1. Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
2. Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call or transported, faxed, or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regard to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
3. The post holder must adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes
4. The post holder must adhere to infection control policies and procedures
5. It is a condition of your employment that you are currently registered with your professional body, and it is your responsibility to maintain your professional registration.
6. Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust.
7. The post holder must participate in clinical and safeguarding audits as required
8. Provide patients and their families /carers with information on standards they should expect from the team
9. Participate in Clinical & Safeguarding supervision on a regular basis
10. To maintain a working knowledge of relevant procedures/statutory requirements including: Youth Justice related legislation and guidance, Safeguarding Children, SEN procedures, 1993 Education Act and other legal frameworks
