Full Job Description

The existing Emergency Department staff pride themselves on providing high quality "shop floor" clinical presence, together with high standards of education, training, research and audit. The post holders will work in close co-operation with nursing, managerial and medical colleagues to provide high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:

  • To provide a first class clinical service to our patients
  • To supervise and teach junior clinical staff
  • To participate in the teaching, research, audit and governance programmes within the Department
  • To develop professionally and take part in all service development
  • To take part in all development and appraisal processes
  • Main Responsibilities The post holder will work with colleagues to ensure middle grade cover 24/7 in the Emergency Department. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director at the commencement date of the appointee. The 10+2 =12 PA contract consists of 11 Direct Clinical Care and one professional development (SPA). The post holder will be expected to show evidence of effective use of the SPA to develop him/her self or service in the department. The post holder will provide twenty four hour middle grade cover which includes weekend and night working. The rota is complaint and is self rostered in line with current RCEM recommendations to facilitate work life balance in EM. When fully staffed, the clinical work will include 1 in 3 weekend work and some night duties (an average of around four nights every month - approximately 1 in 7 nights work). Currently there are 20 middle grade doctors with scope for further expansion. The post holder will have direct consultant support from 09:00-23:00 weekdays and 08:00-17:00 on weekends. There are daily CDU Consultant led ward rounds and ambulatory care clinics which the post holder will be expected to run and participate in. The post holder will participate in the teaching and training of medical staff within the department as well as the undergraduate teaching of medical students, elective students & undergraduates. There is a weekly middle grade teaching programme. Study, and other, leave entitlement is as found in Trust policies. The Speciality Doctors are expected to attend Trust mandatory training, have annual appraisals and updated development plans. The directorate is supportive towards professional development of Speciality Doctors. We are keen to support non-trainee doctors to progress their Emergency Medicine careers by offering quality training opportunities and exam preparation. We endeavour to do this with the development of internal training programmes including inter-specialty rotations. This will ensure doctors gain the skills and competencies required to advance in the Emergency Medicine field. Our Consultant group consist of Educationalists, College Examiners & Deanery TPDs, all of whom would contribute to the development & progression of the post holders career. Post holders will have equal standing to ED Trainees within the Dept. Management experience & exposure will be encouraged & fostered through scheduled meetings with a designated Educational Supervisor. We are able to facilitate formalised inter-specialty secondments in:
  • Anaesthetics/Intensive Care (ICU)

    MBChB or equivalent qualification.
  • MRCEM. Full General Medical Council Registration and Licence to Practise. Have completed at least four years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty (e.g. emergency and/or acute medicine) or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies (suitable for ST3 and above applications). Appropriate practical skills for emergency medicine work. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral Ability to work well within a team, both leadership & followership skills. Demonstrable organisational and time management skills. A genuine interest in the specialty Previous Emergency Medicine experience to allow the successful applicant to work at a middle-grade level.

    The post will be paid in accordance with BMA salary scales corresponding to specialty doctor pay scales and in line with recommendation as per BMA guidelines and eligibility criteria. (The Specialty Doctor (2021 contract) basic payscale).
