Full Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to recruit a full-time specialty doctor for 12 months working in Learning Disability Psychiatry (Intellectual Disability Psychiatry) with Purbeck and Ferndown Community Learning Disability Teams in Dorset. The post holder will provide a community psychiatry service for adult patients with Learning Disabilities in the Purbeck and Ferndown areas (without epilepsy management). Epilepsy management is provided by the specialist Dorset Epilepsy Services from within the neurology service. The post holder will be supported by colleagues experienced in Learning Disability Psychiatry, and work within a well-developed integrated Community Learning Disability Team supported by the Intensive Support Team.

  • The post holder will provide psychiatric input into the Purbeck and Ferndown Community Learning Disability Teams and also into the Intensive Support Team for patients already open to the Purbeck and Ferndown CLDTs.
  • The post holder will be expected to work with the community teams to cover routine and emergency work and to keep waiting lists within the Trust agreed limits. This has been within four weeks for routine referrals from April 2011.
  • The Ferndown and Purbeck CLDTs have a duty system which involves non-medical staff. The post holder will be expected to provide opinions and advice to colleagues covering mental health act work if they are not section 12 approved. As a guide, the current post holder is section 12 approved and typically attends fewer than 5 Mental Health Act Assessments per year.
  • The post holder will be asked to take part in the best fitting on call rota depending on experience and whether the successful applicant is s12 approved.
  • The postholder will provide medical cross cover for annual, study and emergency sick leave with medical colleagues in the adult LD psychiatry service.
