Full Job Description

Kings Norton Hospital in Birmingham supports adults requiring care and treatment for acute mental health conditions across three wards :

Lakeside Ward A 10 bed Acute Mental Health service for women.

Manor Ward A 10 bed Acute Mental Health service for men.

Hope Ward A 12 bed Acute Mental Health service for men.

The service provides high quality intensive treatment in a clinically safe and caring environment.

Our Acute Wards are for patients who need to step down from a PICU setting or who have complex, severe or prolonged mental health issues but do not require a PICU setting.

Patients are either admitted formally or voluntarily.

What you'll be doing :

  • To provide day to day psychiatric and medical management for patients on their respective ward under the supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist.

  • To admit new patients via a full clerking, including full histories, mental state examinations and physical examinations, organising the necessary investigations and following these up to prepare holistic management plans.

  • Presentation of cases in MDT ward rounds and following up the treatment plans.

  • To liaise with referrers, family and other organisations involved in patient care.

  • Participation in clinical and administrative meetings like case discussions and governance meetings is also expected.

  • To participate in first medical on-call rota. Extra days attract further remuneration. The on-call rota is non-residential with expectation that the doctor is able to attend the hospital within 1 hours, when required during on call periods.


  • The hospital also has parallel telephone consultant on-call rota and supervision to support first on call doctors.

  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified

  • Recent experience in psychiatry

  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Knowledgeable of mental health legislation & the Codes of Practice

  • A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes

  • Committed to continued professional development
