The team…

Our aim is to address complex public health issues while working to reduce health inequalities and improve overall community wellbeing at a population level. We work to improve the conditions in which people live with the hope of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting overall wellbeing by focusing on prevention, health promotion and education., We are seeking to recruit a stop smoking advisor to work within our Public Health Team. This role will be both challenging and rewarding supporting the wider tobacco control agenda and plays a key part of creating an approach to quitting which puts the smoker at the centre and focuses on those most in need.

The role will involve providing specialist support, advice and guidance on stop smoking services to a range of professionals, clients, and members of the public. Therefore, an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the treatments and interventions available to smokers in essential, alongside the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

You will support work to develop an effective system-based approach to stop smoking support in Gateshead by coordinating and streamlining pathways for Gateshead residents. Playing a key role in 'Helping smokers to quit' by ensuring the service is targeted to priority population groups, as well as liaising and working with partners to promote the stop smoking service and encourage appropriate referrals. Therefore, experience of engagement work with key partners within the community is essential.

The role will include working at a community level to set up, coordinate and run community-led stop smoking support utilising a range of evidence-based interventions. It is important that the successful candidate has experience of working within stop smoking services and delivering behaviour change interventions to individuals and groups. Knowledge of the local area and an understanding of the barriers local residents face when accessing services would also be an advantage.

You will hold a relevant professional qualification (NVQ level 2 minimum) or significant experience working within smoking cessation. National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training (NCSCT) Level 2 training is desirable. The role is initially offered on a fixed term basis until March 2026 but may be extended if further funding is secured.

You'll be paid a competitive salary £27,334 to £29,777 pa
